we weren't going to get much in the 50's anyway. plus, last year draft is still one of the best the rockets ever had... considering their position of course.
maybe google a proxy ip from australia. like dropping 40pts in a game in the aussie league or setting a 3pt record in a game in the greek league. tall poppy syndrome?
hooroo - ask yourself honestly. do you really think Newley has what it takes to do ANYTHING for the Rockets? this forum is a Rockets fan forum, the people on here want to know how draft picks can help the TEAM. I want him to succeed , this is certainly no case of TPS , im just being realistic. I, as much as any single person in our great country, wants basketball to become relevant again. Whats happened to the Kings and Bullets is a tragedy!! If Newley can prove me wrong then I will be the first to applaud him - especially if it can generate more interest for Basketball in Australia.
great thread. I enjoyed the Pepsi commercial. Is there one about the Badman, so I can watch another Pepsi commercial in the name of a Rocket draft pick who will never play a minute in the NBA?
Newley is a great shooter of the basketball. He's not a terrible athlete either and can get to the rack. Guys who can shoot the ball can play in the NBA. At SF, Newley >> Novak
Newley I watched was a average shooter at best, and average athlete at best. Lior has a better chance to make it to the NBA and he may never make it.
we all know he was picked at 54th and no one in their right mind expects much or anything from such a late pick. in reality the rockets drafted him and that simply makes him relevant to this board. sure you're entitled to have your say on him but how different is each post? newley sucks is an opinion, newley sucks ad nauseum comes off as "hating".
Why is that? Just because you said so? Or was there an actual reason? I'm talking about at the SF spot here. At the SF spot, what exactly does Novak offer an NBA team? 40+% from downtown. That's it. You give Newley a full season in the NBA (like Novak had) and he'd offer you 40+% from downtown PLUS he might actually be able to stay in front of someone on defence. I'm not saying that qualifies Newley as an NBA player - Novak has the added bonus of being 6'9 and being able to slot in at PF (he played equal minutes at the F spots last season) which gives him extra value to an NBA roster. But heck, Jason Kapono is getting $19million over the next 3 seasons - can't see why a team wouldn't give Newley a chance at the minimum (which he'd take). [disclaimer {for the benefit of 'aussie rocket' because he doesn't understand arguments}: I didn't just say Newley was as good as Kapono - but if the one who is 4 times as good can get $19million then the reasoning might suggest the other could get $1million?]
You must have the 2 guys confused - Lior is the average shooter, Newley is a very good 3pt shooter. Over 40% for his career in all manner of leagues. Totally agree on the 'average athlete at best' call - but if you can shoot 40% from downtown with 'average' athleticism then you're far from a terrible pick at 54 (as hooroo keeps pointing out)
NBA contracts are not based on reasoning.Newley has to come to the US and take part in the pre-season camp so management can gauge his progress. If he is doing better in Australia or Greece good for him,but there is a huge difference between the respective talent levels, even College Basketball is stronger than Australian Pro basketball. No minimum contracts should be handed out to anyone, local or international.
I am too laidback (not too mention have bigger fish to fry) to get into an "argument" on here. in the interest of my time I will keep this short. You claim Newley might be able to stay in front of someone on defense? Wrong. He couldnt guard my dead grandmother. You claim Brad's a "great shooter" Oh really, you wouldnt be basing that off his one good game from well over 6 months ago would you?? He is an average-good shooter - and most likely without "NBA 3 pt range". Unlike Novak, who for all his shortcomings, can shoot it from the car park. DrN, I must ask, are you Australian? and how many games (not highlights) have you seen the dude play? Because if you are an Aussie, then i'm assuming your just pumping up Newley for an international audience - when he doesnt warrant it (and you must realise that deep down) and if you've seen him play many games, you'd realise that his athleticism is only marginally better than Novak's, his shot release is slow, and as I mentioned his range isnt there. his ability to get to the rack is ok, not NBA quality though. he is so slender and his finishing skills are far from NBA level. I could go on....
No - totally not basing that from one good game from well over 6 months ago (although that's a nice effort) Like I said in my first post: He is a career 40% 3pt shooter regardless of league. Check out the stats of a guy like, say, Steve Novak, who was around 45% at college - and after adjusting to the longer line, is 45% in the pros. Guys who hit in bulk from range can step it out one foot further (Newley hit 2 3 pointers per game in Greece), And I don't recall saying he's a better shooter than Novak - but at 40%, he's good enough. And before you go on whinging: yes, I am an Aussie who has seen him play a lot. No, I don't think he's ever going to be an NBA superstar - all I'm saying is that he's not a wasted pick at 54 because he can flat out shoot, can ALSO put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim (53 FG% in Greece this year). With some of the guys who are on NBA rosters simply because they can shoot, it's not a total stretch to imagine Newley in the same boat. For the record: I don't like Newley "just because he's an aussie" - in fact I dislike him. But at least I can recognise the skills he brings to the court which (in my opinion, and it would seem many others) are good enough to warrant spending a second round draft pick on him in the best basketball league in the world. I'm not denying your hatred of the guy - just saying it severely clouds your judgement.
^^ I do not hate the guy, as i said elsewhere I really want him to succeed. For Australian basketball and for him personally. He is a very affable charachter, I have met and spoken with him on more than one occasion and found him to be very polite, gracious and funny. I'm just reporting on what everyone here really wants to know - whether he can help the Rockets. the answer is a resounding no!
If we're looking for him to come in next season and be the third scorer - or even a productive guy off the bench then I totally agree! But give him another year in Greece and we'll see what he's got. Guys that can shoot consistently well, year after year, are well worth 'stashing' overseas! And best case scenario is that he lights up the Greek League next year, and gives us a trading chip that's not even on the roster!
