Eddie Griffin News...Newark Star Ledger: Nets In Contact with Eddie Griffin

Nets' deal with Blazers falls apart
    Monday, July 26, 2004
    BY BRAD PARKS
    Star-Ledger Staff

The Nets' hopes of being able to replace one All-Star power forward with another one appear to have been dashed over the weekend by the demise of the Shareef Abdur-Rahim deal, sending their search for a starting four into a new and uncertain direction.

The Nets' long and unfruitful negotiations with the Trail Blazers for Abdur-Rahim -- a deal that had the Nets sending Kerry Kittles, Aaron Williams and a draft pick to Portland -- had been stuck in neutral for days.

Then the Blazers signed restricted free-agent shooting guard Trenton Hassell to a six-year, $27 million offer sheet yesterday, ending their need for Kittles and, along with it, any possible deal for Abdur-Rahim.

"The deal is dead," Nets CEO Rod Thorn said. "It was probably dead anyway."

The only chance the Nets would have for the deal to come back to life is if the Minnesota Timberwolves match Portland's offer for Hassell. That probably won't happen: The Timberwolves are over the luxury tax and seem to be inclined to let Hassell walk.

And even if Portland wasn't able to sign Hassell? The Blazers' interest in what the Nets were offering just never got to be that strong.

That sends the Nets back to square one in their efforts to replace Kenyon Martin, the 26-year-old All-Star who was sent to Denver for three protected first-round draft picks in a sign-and-trade deal.

On their current roster, only Williams and Brian Scalabrine -- a pair of career backups -- have experience at power forward. The Nets are expected to sign 2002 first-round draft pick Nenad Krstic this week, pending a physical. But it would seem unlikely Krstic, who turned 21 yesterday, will be ready to start in his first year in the NBA.

The free-agent picture appears similarly bleak. Stromile Swift is the best free-agent power forward remaining. But Swift appears to be out of the Nets' price range, and Grizzlies general manager Jerry West has made it clear the Grizzlies will match any offer the restricted free agent receives.

The Nets have also remained in contact with Eddie Griffin, who spent a few weeks with the team last winter before his alcohol troubles sent him back to rehab. But Griffin is a long way from being in basketball shape and would be unlikely to help the Nets immediately.

I am shocked that the Nets would take another chance on him.

I believe the guy who said EG has been working out with John Lucas.

We know he gets info from John Lucas - he proved it with the All Star game thing.

This article is just probably assuming that EG is out of shape.

It would be a smart move for the Nets. I don't think they'd lose much if they just signed Eddie Griffin and Keon Clark tosmall deals.

Any news relating to EG should be in the "NBA Dish" section instead of the "Rockets" section. EG is no longer a Rocket people!!

He's a former Rocket. That means it can go here, unless the rules have changed. :)

I don't think so. People here have talked about ex-rox all the time,
    Hakeem, Clyde, Steve, etc.

Man, if ever he had a second chance to make a go of things this is it. Now that Martin is outta there he could potentially get a lot of minutes if he shapes up.

    Good luck Eddie

I have video of a news report with Lucas...and it also had footage of EG working out with Lucas...

It appears to me that the news report is making HUGE assumptions at this point.....unless EG dropped out of Lucas' training sessions soon afterwards, I dont see how he could be in that bad of shape.

Isn't Eddie playing in a summer league somewhere? It should be pretty easy to tell if he's in shape or not for anybody who wants to know.

My guess is that the writer probably heard something from somebody in the Nets organization and passed it along.

Well, third chance. He may do well to stay 'close' to Luke.

I really hope Eddie gets his life together.
After that,I would love to see him tap into that mad hoops talent.
Anyway, sounds like the Nets could use MoTay.

Maybe this is a reach but instead of going after Kerry Kittles, how about the Rockets go after Aaron Williams? I forgot if he played Center for them or not but if he in fact didn't, would they consider this? He is a banger unlike Maurice Taylor and would do a much better job backing up yao than Taylor. He can shoot and finish around the hoop. He also has playoff and finals experience. Think I'm reaching here? because it sounds good to me! :)
