Any NZers out there (or those familiar with NZ) have any tips for a young couple traveling through New Zealand? My 22-YO daughter and her boyfriend arrived there 2 weeks ago and are hoping to stay for a year. Right now they are vacationing but they are wanting and needing to settle into some kind of work in the next several weeks that will keep their trip afloat. They have a travel blog at http://www.ARPhillips.com According to their last post they were near Whangarei. If you have any recommendations all across New Zealand for travelers post them here (and I'll relay them) or on their blog directly. If you know of any "Winter" jobs down there, do likewise. My daughter has a BS in Psychology and a Bartender's License!. Her boyfriend has a BS in Geo-Physics and is a home-brewer and a bicycle enthusiast. They've already bought a car and the new Apple iPhone.... HOPE THEY ARE COMING HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
while your at it find me some odd jobs too...i'll be arriving in auckland dec 1st and will be there till mid jan.
I use to live in NZ so I will give my two cents worth If they need jobs, its probably easiest to find jobs in the big cities, i.e. Auckland, Wellington. Thats really it. Wellington is really windy, and has aweful weather, on the other hand, Auckland is too much of a city though (however, its nothing compared to the US) I really dont know how much work there is in smaller cities and towns (but there are always bars, so I guess your daughter can try her luck there). In terms of travel, these are the places you need to go on the top of my head Christchurch, Queenstown, Fox Glacier, well pretty much all of south island. The scenary there is absolutely incredible, I have never seen anything like it. and the people are very friendly and honest. The North Island is not that bad for someone who grew up in the concrete jungle, but for the Whoa factor, they should definitely go to the South Island.
I don't know if he is still there, but I seem to recall BMoney was living in NZ last I heard. If he doesnt see this thread and respond, you might try contacting him thru the board email.

I think that the best bet for most seasonal employment in New Zealand right now is tourism jobs connected with the ski industry. In the South Island, Queenstown is loaded with resorts and hotels and the whole area down there is incredible, if a bit over commercialized. In the North Island, Mt. Ruapehu (www.mtruapehu.com/winter) is a huge ski resort. Ohakune is another ski resort in the North Island worth checking out. Besides the biggest cities, Rotarua, Taupo and Napier are pretty big tourist places in the North Island, while Kaikoura, Christchurch and Dunedin will have work in the South Island. My overall advice, is to find work at a place for a while and use it as a base to check out the surrounding area. Auckland has some of the best beaches in the world within 30 minutes, while places like Christchurch, or Queenstown have spectacular scenery nearby, as well. I would strongly advise seeing places like Milford Sound and the Pancake rocks in the South Island and hitting Piha and the thermal wonderland of Rotarua in the North Island. Good luck to them...they should have a lot of fun!
Elvis Costello and dimsie? They haven't been around in several years and it was an inglorious exit when they left.
