Time to break out the bicycle in mid December!
How will New Yorkers on this BBS respond to a mass transit strike?

Part of my job is to ride the subway all over the city and make deliveries. I'm gonna be screwed. Mayor Bloomberg recommends hitchiking. is he nuts? The deadline is Sunday

Work has told me that I'm allowed to be late during the strike, but if I skip work, I won't get paid for the day. I'm glad I live in Manhattan and not in the outer boroughs, but it's still going to be tough to get to work. I don't own a bike and finding cabs is gonna be next to impossible. Looks like I'll be walking... 50+ blocks... in freezing temperatures...

Thanks, Mayor Mike. You f***ing suck. Enjoy your 4 years, then get the hell out of office.

You should be thanking the greed of the union. It is their outright selfishness that will bring New York's life to its knees. It amazes me how unions manage to win over parts of the public with their self-centered arguments. Just because they are incapable of surviving on their own merits and therefore must band together to artificially inflate their worth does not mean they are justified in their actions.

Walking 30 blocks and cross town, that's gonna suck. At least I'll get a day's worth of smoking in on the walk, since Mike doesn't want me smoking indoors. I think they'll settle though.

Actually, I blame both sides. However, I blame Bloomberg's budget cuts even more. Sure, the guy will ensure that his own wealth grows (under the new property taxes his administation is implementing), but he can't find it in his heart to pay policemen more or keep a few fire stations from getting completely disbanded. Yes, he inherited New York at a crappy time, but some of the stuff he's doing is really angering New York City residents (and definitely others who live close to Manhattan). Property taxes. Commuter tax. Playing hardball with city employees. Closing down firehouses. Wanting to ban smoking. The list goes on and on... People joke about Bloomberg being "one and done" regarding elections, but if he keeps this kind of crap up, he won't even make it 4 years. Some pissed-off nut will take him out well before re-election time. I'm not kidding, either. Imagine a city full of demented Michael Jacksons, and you have New York. Anything is possible...

And, for the record, TJ, you don't have to tell me about unions. I majored in industrial & labor relations in college and even spent 6 months working for Ft. Worth's National Labor Relations Board regional office. I'm well versed in pro and anti-union sentiments...

    Box mystery at Union Square

One of the 38 boxes found at Union Sq. subway station

Straphangers bracing for a transit strike got a taste of fear and chaos yesterday when a vandal taped 38 boxes on walls and under benches in one of the city's busiest subway stations - closing the hub for five hours.
Cops cleared the Union Square station shortly before 11 a.m. as bomb squad technicians gingerly collected the empty black cardboard boxes with the word FEAR written on them in white block letters.

But it wasn't until just after 4p.m. that the station was reopened, ending a five-hour ordeal that prompted as much cursing as confusion and concern.

"Look at the situation. Today has been a mess!" said Valentina Constantinestu, 42, of Queens, who was trying to find another route home. "It's unbelievable!"

Constantinestu and other commuters wondered out loud whether the hoax had anything to do with the labor problems between transit officials and workers, who could soon go on strike.

"It's a way to shut things down and show people what [a strike is] going to be like," said Nancy Brown, 49, a public relations agent from Manhattan.

When someone suggested the stunt could be a terrorist ploy, George Stathos, 55, of Greenwich Village, bristled, "Ordinary people should just take a stand and stop being afraid."

    'Under investigation'

Police, who had no indication the hoax was related to labor unrest, said it could have been anything from a weird art project to a publicity stunt.

"Any statement about the genesis is speculative," said a police source. "It's all under investigation."

The boxes, most measuring 16 by 20 inches, were spray-painted black and taped to walls and under benches throughout the sprawling station, which serves the 4, 5, 6, L, N, R, Q and W lines.

The boxes were first noticed at 10:42 a.m. by a transit police sergeant on truancy patrol.

The station was shut down within nine minutes and trains were diverted to other lines.

"Oh, terrific!" griped Mary Ann Masucci, 39, of Manhattan who was rushing to Brooklyn to care for her sick aunt. "This screws everything up."

Police were checking video surveillance tape for clues and dusting the boxes for fingerprints.

No one reported witnessing the culprit plant the boxes in the bustling hub, which houses a police substation.

"With all the police down there, they couldn't see them put all the boxes up on the wall and all over the station?" wondered Stanley Fishbein, 60, of the Lower East Side. "What are the cops doing?"

Looks like the old "A moped is like a fat woman...fun to ride until your friends find out" joke may become a thing of the past...
