What's the point of owning one if you don't have internet? You lose 90% of the features you're paying for.

If this is the case, I will most likely just stay put with my Xbox360 and play the games I missed.

That or purchase a PS3 and play the exclusives I missed from that platform.

Who the hell is making decisions for these firms anyway...

Definitely going to wait and hear their explanation at their announcement before I judge.

We've already been discussing this issue a bit in this thread, just FYI.

But for now there simply hasn't been any official confirmation. It seems as though always-online is a current feature, as there are too many people confirming it to deny it's true. But with all the backlash they've been experiencing, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft scrapped the idea before they officially announce the truth or falsity of all these reports.

I also wouldn't be all that surprised if they stuck with it. But if they do I think they're going to get bitten harder than they realize. There are a lot of gamers (myself included) who aren't going to buy a system with an online requirement when there's a competing system without such a requirement. I've begrudgingly put up with always-online for Diablo, but buying an entire platform that requires constant internet connectivity is something else.

LOL if it's true and they go through with it.

You'd think after Simcity that the industry would learn.

Seriously who doesn't have internet nowadays? I would think that a large percentage of video game consumers have internet access at home.

I saw the other thread, but felt that this was pretty significant news.

This is pretty solid information. No doubt there is still a chance it can be changed, but not only do they come out and say you need internet, but that if it is disconnected from the internet, the 720 will stop functioning.

I just cant figure out why they would make it this way. On deployment, when we were on base we played COD, without internet of course. What about LAN parties? I remember hooking up 4 XBOX's to play the old HALO games. What happens if I take my box on the road with me?

If the box comes out, and this is the case, I will probably move to PS4 instead.

The storm the other day knocked out my internet, but not my power. Its good to know that if that situation comes up again, I won't be able to play my Xbox. At all.

Someone at Forbes made the point that a hack on the level of what the PSN experienced in 2011 -- it was out for 24 days -- would in the case of an always-online console make people unable to play any games at all. It was bad enough when the PSN was out and people were stuck with single-player only -- how much worse for none of your games to work in any capacity for a month? And who thinks Microsoft won't have made themselves targets of such hacker attacks for just this purpose?

If the entire market had ganged up on consumers and agreed to all do always-online, then maybe they could pull it off. But when there's a comparable competitor who offers basically the same services but without always-online (namely Sony in this case), then including this "feature" seems a lot like committing hara-kiri.

Wow, Xbox is making some bold moves from only being able to play once and now requiring an internet connection. I predict that's going to piss some people off.

I usually play on the internet, and love the features that come with it but as a requirement I think that's stupid. Your rarely going to have internet if you take your Xbox on trips or if the kids want to play in the car. That's the great thing about old generation video games is they still work to their full functions.

It seems like microsoft is trying to get a feeler for the feedback. Always online is just a terrible idea and will alienate a good part of their base. I certainly will never buy a product that requires always online.

The stats on those with Xbox Live along with those that dont have it... there is a significant number of customers to lose over this.

Also, No one is asking for a console that has a requirement for internet connection or its just dead hardware. That is a dumb decision if its true.
