New Beck album yesterday, New Weezer Album in May, both are sort of throwbacks but not just copies of 90's stuff. I'm pysched as all hell right now. You can listen to the first single on their website. Just scroll down to 3/23/05 entry:http://weezer.com/news/ I haven't been paying atttention to them lately, so I was completely unaware that they were this close to putting out the new album. ima, I blame you. You should have started a thread about this. Weezer Plot Comeback New disc harks back to their classic Nineties sound After two years of scattered recording sessions -- and two weeks of Metallica-style group therapy -- Weezer have finally finished their fifth album. "It took a long-ass time," drummer Pat Wilson says of Make Believe, which hits stores May 10th. Blame the delay on Rivers Cuomo's periodic semesters at Harvard -- where the thirty-four-year-old frontman continues to pursue an undergraduate degree -- and on his frequent dissatisfaction with his own songs. "I think Rivers was pretty emotionally divorced from our last two records," says Wilson of 2001's Green Album and 2002's Maladroit. "You can totally hear it. It sounds like we're just kind of stoned out, like a Seventies rock band who tours all the time." But with the guidance of Audioslave producer Rick Rubin, Cuomo started writing tunes he liked -- and many of them recaptured the naked honesty of 1996's Pinkerton and the band's 1994 debut, the Blue Album. The first single, "Beverly Hills," is one of Weezer's best-ever pop songs, combining heavy guitar crunch with a melody Wilson says has a "Steve Miller vibe." Its video, shot at the Playboy Mansion, is in the quirky tradition of the Happy Days-themed "Buddy Holly" clip. The probable second single, "We Are All on Drugs," has a pop-metal vibe that evokes Def Leppard. But other album tracks, such as the power ballad "Peace," sound like autobiographical dispatches from a troubled soul: "All these problems in my mind/Make it hard for me to think," Cuomo sings in a quavering voice over acoustic-guitar strumming. The song climaxes in a choir's worth of overdubbed Cuomo vocal tracks that harmonize on some prototypically Weezer-ish whoa-oh-oh's. The breakup lament "This Is Such a Pity" -- which boasts Cars-like chugging rhythm guitars, a prominent synthesizer part from a cheap Casio and a lengthy guitar solo -- is similarly heartfelt. "We didn't ever set out and say, 'Let's do a mixture of Pinkerton and the Blue Album with some Maladroit guitar solos,' " says guitarist Brian Bell. "But I think it sounds like that, because that's what we are." Weezer will support the release of Make Believe with a North American tour beginning April 26th in Vancouver. Weezer North American tour dates: 4/26: Vancouver, Commodore Ballroom 4/27: Seattle, Paramount Theater 4/29: San Francisco, Warfield 4/30: Indio, CA, Coachella Festival 5/03: Minneapolis, MN, First Avenue 5/04: Chicago, Aragon Ballroom 5/05: Detroit, State Theater 5/06: Toronto, Kool Haus/The Dock 5/08: Boston, Orpheum Theater 5/10: Philadelphia, Electric Factory 5/11: New York, Roseland Ballroom 5/12: New York, Roseland Ballroom 5/14: Atlanta, Tabernacle http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7207628/weezer?pageid=rs.Artistcage&pageregion=triple3 EDIT: my bad, I just noticed you pointed out the new album in the "who wants to jam" thread.
i heard their first single last week on the radio and I thought it was Bloodhound Gang.... I got to hear it again, it may grow on me. Plus, their last 2 albums I thought were pretty good, so wondering why they are going "back to their 90's sound"
You can't forget the new Nine Inch Nails Album (With Teeth) that is coming out on May 3rd. I've heard most of the new tracks from some of the recent bootlegs, and I'm really loving the sound. I'm also looking forward to this Weezer album, and then Audioslave is coming out with a new one in May as well. Should be a good couple of months for new music!
There are a LOT of good albums coming out soon. DMB, Alien Ant Farm, Jason Mraz, Weezer, Garbage, System of a Down and.....(YAY!) Ben Folds.
This summer should be great for albums, in addition to those you mentioned: Audioslave, Coheed and Cambria, Every Time I Die, Bleeding Through
Yep, I was going to wait until the day it came out and post a review. I haven't heard the new single yet (I'll listen when I get home) but from what I'm reading, I'm pretty stoked. The article compares their sound to their 1st 2 albums instead of their last 2 albums. IMO that's a good thing. I was pretty disappointed with Green and Maladroit overall. These are the qoutes that have me excited: Especially these two! I can't =w=ait.
I love that track. It's like Phil Spector would be doing now if he weren't criminally insane. Coheed & Cambria?? Wow. I really dug their last album.
I cant wait for the Audioslave cd, I will prob pick up Weezer as well, been listening to the "Blue Album" recently love that cd.
Since we're talking new albums...anyone pick up the news Queens of the Stone Age? It took two listens, but I'm liking it.
Both of their albums are amazing. The problem is the majority of people who got into them recently only know the two "pop" songs they see on MTV.
Cant really get into them, dont really like the singers voice but thats just me, I know a lot of people who like em.
I can understand that, it took me a few listens before I could get past his voice. They're all great musicians.
I did. I love "Everyone Knows That You Are Insane". The first part of it sounds like it could be off of "Rated R" and then it kicks into a "Songs For The Deaf" sound. I heard the first one wasn't that good -- that they had a bit of band turnover between the two. I'm still waiting for the damn System of a Down CD. That was supposed to be out in February.
That's the problem with them getting MTV play, people here "Blood Red Summer" and "A Favor House Atlantic" and they think they're a pop-rock rand. Which they're not. If you like the other tracks on In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3, listen to The Second Stage Turbine Blade. BTW, the band is the exact same on both albums. I can't wait for the System album either, it seems like forever sinve I've heard anything new from them.
Yay! Weezer and NIN, these will be the two best, now when the hell will the Bloodhound gang make a new album?
I heard the new Weezer song yesterday and wasn't that impressed (and I'm a big fan). It seemed extra corny even for Weezer. Of course, I might come to love it at after a few more listens. As to the last couple albulms, I too got the sense they were just sort of on autopilot. It would be great to see them return to the highs of Pinkerton my personal favorite), and the Blue albulm.
Yeah, I just heard the new single. It didn't do much for me. Maybe I need to hear it a few more times. I'm still excited about the new album.
I like it, though I don't think it should be the first single of an album. Did you guys not even like the Peter Frampton style solos?
