Well the Catholic Church has literally elected an ex member of a Hitler youth group. Though not probably a real Nazi, he was just a scared kid, this means that we won't see any reform in the church. He is a member I believe of Opus Dei, the conservative cult that was so supportive of Franco and other Fascists.

He will try to hold the line on such inanities as the celibate clergy, no women priests, no condoms for women whose husband's have aids, no birth control for poor folks whose other kids are dying of malnutrition, masturbation will remain something that sends you to hell, no communion for those who have been divorced etc.etc.

In addition I wouldn't be surprised that unlike the previous Pope, he will advocate that Catholics should be crusaders and try to conquer and convert Muslim countries. (hopefully this is just sarcastic) In short it is like we made Donald Rumsfeld or Woflowitz pope.

This is good news for other religions that will increasingly pick up Catholic converts in the developed countries.

The only positive is that he is 78 years old; it would be better if he were 88.

If that is the case, the Bush administration and a little over half of the United States should be thrilled with Benedict XVI.

I think only an atheist pope would satisfy some.

glynch, it's one thing to liken President Bush to Hitler, but seriously, the POPE? This is not only your all-time low, but possibly that of the BBS. Unbelievable. Seriously.

glynch, you seriously need to learn facts before developing your opinions. That would help you out a lot in life. A whole lot.

You're welcome for the free advice, btw.

Does this mean that all Boy Scouts are not fit to be president of the United States because of the anti-gay Boy Scout agenda?

In all fairness to Glynch I believe this part to be true:

I guess whether they are inanities or not is debateable.

    Ok I'll play.

We saw reform in the church during the Reformation. If you don't like it, don't be Catholic. Vatican II was a big reform by the way. What are you looking for, free health care?

No he's not, and Opus Dei was one of the only groups in Spain able to keep religion alive. Its founder St. Josemaria had to move from place to place to stay alive and had to escape across the Pyrenees to stay alive. Here's his one letter to Franco which this guy from this anti-Opus Dei website tries to pass off as damning... http://www.odan.org/escriva_to_franco.htm

Its a half baked arguement, as they all will be when you google Escriva, Opus Dei, and Franco.

Bottom line is, a lot of people hate staunch conservatism, which Opus Dei is, and so they are taking pot shots at that more than anything. I read an LA times article saying that because Opus Dei has 2 cardinals that they are controlling who is Pope. BS.

Besides putting each of these in the most unfair light possible could you please give some arguments against them? I've given plenty in favor, except for any sin sending someone to hell. If you can find the church document with the sending of specific people to hell that would be pretty nice. Thanks in advance.

Better yet, I'll give short arguments.

celibacy, its a vocation unlike marriage, sorry, its just a different calling

    women priests, tradition and http://www.catholic.net/rcc/Periodicals/Faith/0506-96/article4.html

condoms, are viewed as sinful, you can't just make something not a sin. It deadens the marital act.

no birth control for poor folk, NFP

Masterbation, this is idiocy, SIN sends you to hell, confession helps you from going there, but once again, the Catholic church has never condemed anyone to Hell!

If you've been divorced, which you shouldn't except in extreme cases in the church, you should go to confession and then you may recieve the Eucharist again. Stop spreading lies.

What the hell are you talking about!?!?! Source please. What is a crusade to you?

    Yeah it is.

Wouldn't be complete without wishing death on the guy for being conservative. Pretty sweet glynch. You're like a child who stumbles into a BBS discussion without knowing what you're talking about! Save your hate for W. This ain't politics man.

Twhy, you make it sound like as a Catholic you can pretty much do anything and still go to Heaven as long as you go to confessional.

Twhy, "Out of my league" that is wierd phraeseology on your part. Are you in Opus Dei?

Ratzinger is a fanatic conservative who believed before beoming pope that he alone has the truth and many fear will be even worse now -- if you don't believe exactly like him leave the Church.

Despite 100% Catholic education through college, and 1 year of grad school, parents also educated in Catholic schools through university who have remained devoted Catholics. and frequent visits to the house while growing up of priests and even a bishop, who came by regularly when I was in highschool, I'm not at present a Catholic.

Wow, you would think from this thread that we were discussing glynch's candidancy for Il Papa. I would say glynch would make a crappy Pope -- no offense glynch.

Anyway, I wish to high holy halls I had put big money on this. I work with all sorts of catholics who were voting against Ratchicken, and I totally knew he would be the new pope. He is such an intelligent, savy man, and he's had years to solidify his base for this as John Paul's health slowly crumbled. As for the guy's politics, he did once write that it would be *less* sinful to knowingly give a partner AIDS through hetero sex than it would be to use a condom. That's an interesting stance.

The choice of Benedict is interesting, though, as the last Benedict was fairly moderate. Maybe he's holding out the peace pipe to liberation theologists? Wouldn't bet on it yet.

As for Hitler youth, it seems mostly irrelevant to this guy, BUT, if you only elect a Deutsch Pope once every 1000 years or so, don't you think you might SKIP one who was in the Hitler youth? Kind of hilarious. I mean, we could have just waited for the next Pope or so, you think? One who had absolutely no relation to the Holocaust? Nah. Let's pick Ratchicken.

I won't get started on the Nazi vs. Catholic conversation, but suffice it to say that the topic is incredibly complex and fascinating -- I urge those undecided or uneducated not to close their minds after a few callous posts. There are many volumes written on the topic.

PS -- glynch, don't you know that Ratchicken has a big problem with American Maxist/"Catholic" institutions? We may see some changes in the air! It will be especially interesting if the Jesuits get excommunicated for... what is it? ... the fourth time in history?
