New Playstation Console announced. PS2.5 before PS3 I guess this is the PS 2.5 everyone was talking about. Because Sony is having problems with the cellchip, I guess they need something to hold them over until 2007's PS3. This also means Xbox lite is comming out too then. They added a DVD recorder, harddrive, built in network card. Damn looks like the playstation got a major power-boost and will stop sucking. Sony announced today the PSX, a new hardware platform scheduled for Japanese release this year and American/European release next year (try not to confuse it with the code-name for the original PlayStation system). The PSX includes the PlayStation 2's Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer chips and will allow you to play PS2 games. But this isn't just a games system. The PSX also comes with a TV tuner, DVD recording capability and a 120 gigabyte hard disk. On top of this are USB 2.0 and memory stick support and a built-in Ethernet adapter. This product was announced as part of a financial meeting for the entire Sony group in which big shot Ken Kutaragi revealed that the PS2 has reached worldwide cumulative shipments of 52.5 million. Following an introduction to the recently announced PSP (Play Station Portable) hardware, Kutaragi introduced and demoed the PSX. According to Sony, the PSX represents the synergy between games and electronics. The built-in PS2 hardware will be used not just for games, but for the product's recording features. Sony clarified the nature of the product following the presentation: "The PSX is a product not from SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment), but from Sony. It's a product that was born from the synthesis of the game and electronic fields, so while you can play games on it, it will not take the position of a game console. We're making it into a new DVD/HDD (hard disk drive) recording product that includes technology from SCE."
yea, their releasing this before ps3 because they can't manufactur the cellchip in time. PS3 is looking like 2007
I seriously doubt there will be a XBox lite. Bill Gates has already said "no" because the technology wasn't where it needed to be to produce a "lite" xbox. The xbox lite idea was always going to be a smaller version of the original xbox. It wasn't about adding home theater capabilities like this psx thing. I assume you will be able to record TV(like a Tivo), play console games, store/play music, record DVDs, and hook up to your PC/LAN/internet using the PSX. XBox will have those same capabilities except for the DVD recorder as is with software updates. The difference being it will use your computer to store/retrieve TV programming(via your LAN) from while the XBox software will provide the interface to record/playback TV(like a Tivo). They have already announced MP3 software and some other software packages at E3 to use the Xbox for more home-theater oriented things. I wonder how much this PSX will cost and if it is worth buying it if you already have a PS2? On another note, my XBox ethernet port was fried by a lightning strike(the rest of the xbox works fine apparently except for xbox live...not sure about system link play). It would have cost me $109 to fix the damn thing through MS. So, I just bought another one new for $179 with the S Controller(which I have the old controller now). So, now I have two xboxes...one will be a spare bedroom DVD player/gaming machine and the other will be my new primary xbox. Fun.
I'd be suprised if it was 199. Has a tivotype tuner, 120 Gig Hd, Dvd Burner/player all this for 199? I just don't see it. Maybe 299.
I think the confusion lies in the fact that there is an upgraded PS2 coming out in June. The upgraded PS2 has some firmware update, a bulit in infra-red port, and the network adapter. The older PS2s will be lowered in price and the upgraded PS2 will sell for $199. The PSX will NOT be $199 for a long time. B
