I have heard that the Rockets were thinking about changing the offense this year because of the addition of Yao. I have been looking for any links to articles that touch on this. What is the name of the offense, and do any other teams run it? I would really appreciate the info.
You're in luck, there was a thread about that yesterday. But I'm not sure how much it will help. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40672&highlight=hexagon
They'll be a new offense, but I was joking over 12 months ago about the "trapezoid" offense. The RocketsGuy then reported a "hexagon" offense. None of that exists. But if we don't have a new offense, I'll be disappointed...to put it mildly. I don't expect a new name will come with the "new offense." I mean, how many coaches give new invented names to their offenses anyhow?
Did a search on heypartner and trapezoid. From about 18 months ago: <i>I still have not been able to get Rudy drunk at Kinneally's, yet. That's when I plan to plant the seed about the new Trapezoid Offense I've designed.</i> Damn I love the search function.
With the players that we have, I would be really disappointed if we didn't run a motion offense. Francis, Mobley, Griffin, Nachbar, and Yao would probably play great in that environment. I remember I heard Rudy T on 610 sports talking about the changes in the offense right around draft time. He had mentioned that they would not be utilizing as many isolation plays, and they would be incorporating a lot of movement without the ball.
Another thing that should give Rudy a lot more options on offense is the spacing that we should have now. When we have Ming, Griffin, Nachbar (or Lewis ), Mobley, and Francis on the floor at the same time, the defense won't be able to cheat very much because that's five guys who can knock down the three. I think this will be one of the most important things Ming will bring to the team...pulling opposing centers out from the basket.
Its called the'Inside outside or pass it arround the perimeter and find the open shooter Offence' Its the New Order but just think back to our Championship years, it works!
I wonder if the coaches have ever thought about taking a look at this. http://www.bbhighway.com/Talk/Coaching_Box/Clinics/Triangle/triangle_intro.asp
You will likely see some high-post pick and roll. HP pointed me to the UCLA cut a while back. Check this link : http://www.cybersportsusa.com/hooptactics/ucla.asp In the diagram, 1 is steve, 2 - cat, 3 - nachbar, etc. Yao towers over the opposition and has good passing skills. Imagine Steve gets that ball back... look out . You might also see "horns" - on the same link. Here a picture on how other teams try to defend the UCLA. http://www.bbhighway.com/Talk/Coaching_Box/Clinics/BasicDef/ucla_hp.asp O is offense, D is defense, positions 1-5, duh. I think we can beat that. .
sucked me in good & proper on that one then. i couldn't find the link using the search at the time (my spelling ain't that great.. had an "A" instead of an "E" in "trapezoid"), tho it was mentioned in a few post... using the search function now (result thread is worth the read http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32825&highlight=trapezoid ... got my new sig from it) your description still sounds good & i think it could work for us. ...i forgot that line though just remebered the concept... I would hate to be around you on april fools day if this is how your mind works
our offense will be the same but it will look new due to the fact we now have shooters t the pf, c, and sf postions this time.
harumph, funny thing is that Flip Saunders does indeed call his defense the "hyperbolic paraboloid transitional floating zone." That is just fancy speak for a match-up zone. I wonder if they come up with names like think to make their players more awe-inspired to listen. If they say "match-up zone," the players might say...'yeah, yeah, yeah, we did that in high school" -- the ole Phil Jackson mind-game tactics with multi-millionaires. hmmm....maybe Rudy should invent a new name for an old offense. btw: around Feb 21, 2001 near the time I made the Kenneally's remark, I did start a new thread about a new offense. That had some funny lines too. For some reason, that is unsearchable now. Must have been deleted.
