The audience for the NFL draft has been growing, and the league has responded by expanding the event from two to three days. Commissioner Roger Goodell notified teams Thursday that the draft will be spread over three days in 2010, running April 22-24. "We continue to look for ways to make the draft more accessible to more fans," Goodell said in a statement. "Moving the first round to prime time on Thursday night will make the first round of the draft available to fans on what is typically the most-watched night of television." ESPN and the NFL Network will televise the entire show. The first round will take place on Thursday, April 22, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds will start at 6:30 p.m. ET on April 23. Rounds 4 through 7 will be on April 24, starting at 1 p.m. ET. More than 39 million watched the draft during the 2009 two-day broadcast. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4351601
Not sure what to think right now. Looks like you could be up till 12 on a work night for round 1 though.
Clearly this is a ratings move. They get 'primetime' on Thursday for the 1st round and a lesser 'primetime' on Friday with 2 & 3. Personally, I don't like it. Ditto the 1st round going late on a worknight. That sucks. Also, I kind of liked hunkering down for the draft starting on Saturday and then on Sunday. Now it's like the draft isn't even on the weekend. I think it looses some steam stretching it out 3 days. I am sure the NBA will love the fact they will have Sunday all to themselves for the NBA Playoffs.
Impressed with the ratings; the NFL really must be the most profitable thing in the history of television. Not that that's necessarily a good thing. But that third day, that's gonna be brutal. At least it's not, what, 14 rounds like it used to be.
f this.. i don't like it being on a weeknight instead of a saturday morning (I didn't like that they moved it to the late aftn last year, either)
