Kornheiser, Theismann, Tirico on new crew as MNF shifts to cable February 8, 2006 BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- Former quarterback Joe Theismann, Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser and Mike Tirico will be the broadcast crew for "Monday Night Football" next season as the long-running show shifts to ESPN from ABC. The moves leave Al Michaels free to switch to NBC, which takes over Sunday night games next season from ESPN. John Madden, Michaels' broadcast partner for the last four seasons, agreed in June to a six-year contract with NBC. At a news conference in July, Michaels said he would remain with "Monday Night Football" when it switched to ESPN. He was to be paired with Theismann, who had broadcast Sunday night games on ESPN with Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire. Mike Breen will replace Michaels as the lead NBA play-by-play announcer on ABC/ESPN. He will be joined by former NBA coach Hubie Brown, hired in December 2004 as the analyst. Theismann was an NFL quarterback for 12 seasons and had worked on ESPN's Sunday night games since 1988. In addition to working for the Post, Kornheiser has co-hosted "Pardon the Interruption" on ESPN since September 2001 with Michael Wilbon, another Post writer. Tirico has been a "SportsCenter" host for ESPN and handled play-by-play of the last Orange Bowl. He has worked for ESPN and ABC since 1991. Michele Tafoya returns for her third season as a "Monday Night Football" sideline reporter, and Suzy Kolber was added as a second sideline reporter. I guess that means Al Michaels to NBC. As far as MNF goes, as long as Paul McGuire isnt on the team, I am happy. Mike Hyperbole Patrick wont be missed either.
Theisman is pretty blah. Kornheiser can be funny but I don't know if I've ever heard him try to do standard commentary that isn't laced with hyperbole an ranting...could be interesting. Tirico is excellent at what he does.
I can't stand Mike Tirico. Al Michaels should of been on the MNF crew. Michaels, Kornheiser, and Theisman would be cool. So Tirico is going to do the play-by-play? Ah, crap...
Tirico's pretty good, don't see why anyone "couldn't stand him". he's espn's number one play by play guy I believe. doesn't he also do abc's golf majors. he's damn good at his job.
With those three announcing, MNF in my house will consist of the TV on, the mute button pushed, and some kickass music coming out of my stereo. What a pathetic group those three are!
I'm rather disappointed that Paul McGuire won't be calling MNF. His analysis were so indepth and he often wanted to show me something. And to watch this... watch this... bam. I'm going to miss listening to a kicker arguing about football with Theisman.
Same here, I can't stand Michaels. Not sure why ESPN didn't just bring the entire Sunday Night crew over. They have a great chemistry. I would reather go with a proven team than some crap they are throwing together, though I do like Tirico alot. Not sure how Tony is going to fit. I mean, if it will consist of him trying to be funny all game, it is going to suck.
ESPN's Sunday night crew was the worst crew I've ever heard. I don't know how Paul McGuire pulls a paycheck. I've never heard anyone worse than him for any sport. I don't need in depth analysis of a freakin' time out. The next staged "argument" he and Thiesman get into will be too soon. Those guys talk so much that half the time their cutting eachother off. 2 or 3 seconds of dead air after a TD is OK, guys. Let us enjoy the crowd for a few seconds.
I can't beleive so many people care. Honestly...do the announcers ever really add much value. It is just background noise. I personally don't like listening to music or watching or mute, and have never been into listening to the radio and watching on tv. Seriously, the bad ones are good because you get to make fun of them (Bill Walton has made a career out of recognizing this fact and being purposely bad). The good ones are good because they might actually say something useful. Michaels, Madden, Tirico, Kornholio...who cares
ever heard walt frazier on a knick's broadcast. a few terms he's very fond of, perculating omnipotence, as in "curry went to hole with omnipotence" gyrating tintillating just to name a few. the guy is a joke. its sad that he has been doing their broadcasts for so long.
Who cares? Either way you look at it, its still football. I don't like Theisman though, but I won't resort to muting the tube.
Tirico is okay, but I think he's much better in a studio doing pregame/halftime shows. I wouldn't have minded Mike Patrick and Theismann as long as Paul Maguire was left out. And no, it doesn't really matter that much who the announcers are. 95% of them don't really add much to the game, but are just something to fill in when their is time in between plays. But there are those few announcers/analysts that really make the game more entertaining to watch...one duo I think of is Kevin Harlan and Doug Collins in the NBA (and now that Calvin is gone I think of him and Bill for the Rockets).
Not really, but some of them (Theisman/McGuire) talk so much that they actually take away from the game. That's why I care. Does anyone else think McGuire sounds like Popeye? OH GOD, I want to kill him. I want to kill him so very deeply.
Worst Crew Ever. Wait, Theisman, McGuire and Chris Berman would be the worst crew ever. So I guess it's not so bad....YET.
John Madden must know some basketball, right? I'd pay good money to watch a game with a three-man crew of Madden, Bill Walton, and Calvin Murphy.
