Look how the new logo compares to all the others. It stands out like a sore thumb. It'a almost obnoxious how it's bolder and bigger than any other logo. Scroll Down And in this power ranking, it's the biggest logo from top to bottom of any. Power Ranking It really sticks out....I like it!!!!!
THe only reason it sticks out is because for whatever reason ESPN has decided to use an 80 x 80 pixel Rockets logo while all the other seem to be 50 x 50. If ESPN needs someone to shrink that logo 50 x 50 pixels, I'm willing to work for $75/hr with a $150 minimum and shrink it for them.
Personally, I think ESPN needs to contract out Rocketeer for a precision resize just to make sure the job is done RIGHT. No offense, DoD.
The logo is very different. But I like it. As Tim said many times, the logo is a move away from the busy "cartoon" logos to a streamlined "monogram/letterman" logo. This style, like the Astros, or Cubs, or Yankees, are very recognizable from a distance. It might be simple. But at least it's not tacky. If successful, I wouldn't be surprised in if a few more teams start to move away from the "cartoon" logo.
It certainly catches the eye. The other ones kind of blend in together. Unique is good. I can dig it.
I saw that the other day. How stupid is ESPN that they can't size that logo down to match the sizes of the other logos? Just odd! However, assuming it is the same size, no question it REALLY sticks out! Every other logo is a combination of things and has depth with drop shadows an such where are our logo looks like linear art. It DOES stand out. And early on I think people will be like WTF? But as people get USED to the logo it will become more memorable. I think the value in the logo is more the long term than the "short term WOW" factor.
On your computer keyboard, while on that ESPN page, hold CTRL and press A, and you will select all text along with images. Note how the image is way larger than the rest. Also, there is a lot more WHITE SPACE between the end of the red in the logo and the outside of the image. This fools you to believe that the picture is "larger" when it is actually nothing but white space. Web dude.
Dear Web Dude, Right-click on the picture and select properties. The image itself is larger. The "white space" is part of the picture. Measure the "R" from top to bottom (not including whitespace). Compare the results to the other images. The "R" is larger at over 0.75 inches. The other graphics are under 0.5 inches. And that's not counting "white space". Also notice that there is very little white space (almost none) at the top and bottom of the Rockets' logo. They needed a square image. The picture they have happened to be 80 pixels in height, so it had to be 80 pixels wide to be a square. Hence the big ol' graphic. The image is larger, and the logo itself without whitespace is larger. All you need is a high-tech thing called a ruler (or a graphics editing program) to prove it. Ain't nobody fool'd. They need a new image!
The Yankees have 2 logos. They have the classic one with NY and the circle one http://sportsmed.starwave.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/sml/nyy.gif Why cant the Rockets have something similar to that. Like a basketball in the background..
Take a look at how the Rockets logo looks with other logos from other leagues. http://lockers.nhmccd.edu/main/fileman.asp?a=dl&f=0|Rockets+Logo+with+other+logos.doc

I realize the resolution of the Rockets new logo is larger than the others. My point was that it stands out more than the rest. If you scan quickly, it's hard not to notice it. It's almost funkly how different it is. But what the hell, I like it!!
I'm glad it stands out, every other logo seems to be a boring variation of the Rockets old logo forumula: team name with a small represenation of the mascot involved. The symbol is much cooler IMO. I like a little bit of mystery.
