Saw this over at Deadspin. sore loser

I work with a lot of guys like this and their daughters or sons are like 7 to 12 yrs old. I don't see how I could even participate in kids sports now days. People are a little obsessed even in t-ball. One of my daughter did Volley Ball for a few years but Baseball and softball seem to be much worse.

    no coments?

Come on. Do any of you know any of these parents. I get guys coming in to work and they are pissed because their team of little girls "did not leave it all on the field". I mean they are really angry. Or they are pissed because let some of the "****ty kids" play a little and it cost them a T-ball game? Parents in the stands calling out 6yr olds for sucking? Really people when I was in Little league it was more laid back and fun.

It has become a bit ignorant and over the top. I see parents making their kids cry when they do bad during play. We're talking 6-10 year old children. This is supposed to be fun to them and teach them a little something. Now it seems all it does is present psychological damage in the form of demeaning and over-demanding parents.

I know some parents whose daughter was being outplayed in her age group so what they is dropped her an age group the next season and all of a sudden she is a star. Ridiculous.

We just take sports too seriously as a society, IMO. It's just a fun past time. Unless you're a degenerate gambler, if the result of game has you in a bad mood the next day, you probably need to relax.

The over-competitive parents are just the most egregious because, well, getting that worked up over little kids playing sports is r****ded.

I am currently coaching an all star team here in Austin with my 8 year old son.

The parents are amazing, but what is worse is all the dad's that voted for the A, B, C, D, and E teams....

I proposed a straight up open meritocracy vote, where parents could see where there kid was rated on a set criteria by scouts and their coaches.

Daddy ball overuled it, and as a result we have several kids on teams they should not be on, or at that level while some that should be on higher teams get put on lower teams because their dad did not coach or have a vote.

    It is sad really......

My son is the starting SS on the "C" team, and we just waxed our "B" team because of this stuff, too many of our kids should have been on their team and vice versa.

But that is not all, we have 12 kids on the roster, only 9 can play, and our head coach is basically going to have to sit 2 kids most of the time because they are not on a decent level.

Everyone gets to bat, but not everyone is guaranteed to play in the field, which pretty much sucks.....

Our "A" team is a lock for state, and one other team from our region will go, if we want to get there, we have to sit players and play the 9 or 10 that are more consistent.....

If we don't, we will be out in 2 weeks at regionals......

For the record, I am tired of baseball, and would go the "Everyone plays" route...

But that would be cheating some of the kids out of a legitimate shot at going to a state tournament....

    Man, my head hurts.......lol....

BTW - we went undefeated in pool play this weekend and are seeded 4th in tomorrow's tourney of 14 teams......gonna be a long day.

The "A" team coach yells and screams at his players, and even through a batting helmet that almost hit his own son.

Worse, he shook his kid because he didn't hustle. He was reported and has calmed down some, but the dude is an absolute asshat.

What bugs me though, is a good friend of mine nestled up to him for a year to get his kid on the "A" team....while his kid is a nice little ball player, he is really small and not really that caliber...and what I consider worse is sacrificing his morals to get his son that slot.

I told him that seeing a coach shake a kid was almost as bad as being the kid that got shaken.....

Totally ridiculous....but this guy is LIVING in the baseball of his sons playing select ball every weekend....

My son, plays seasonally, and he has not locked into one sport, nor would we ask him too....travel ball at 8? Are you FRICKEN KIDDING ME?

I have seen parents spend enough for a college education on sports for their kid so that maybe they can get a scholarship! Really no offense but other than a scholarship your softball player is not going to earn millions. I mean if your kid gets a scholarship to a JR college was it worth all the money you spent? Between fees trips out of state, private lessons ect. Just not worth it. I get it that some kids have huge potential but most are just not that good or that motivated. I have 3 daughters. I know their skill level at various things. I am realistic. Some parents just can't see the truth. I realized my daughter was going to be 5 foot tall and was not super competitive. No need to spend thousands a year thinking she was going to a division 1 volleyball team! My point is to quit living vicariously through your kids. Put them in something they enjoy not something you enjoy.

While I see a need for some pushing, I think that some parents take it waaaay too far.

My parents allowed me to do as I saw fit and perhaps that is why I never really stuck with anything. When things got hard or the least bit boring I would quit, no matter how good I was. I feel that my parents should have pushed me a little, told me that I should stick with it. Children don't really understand the thought process behind quitting and not sticking with things.

I spent short times in basketball and soccer. I spent the most in softball and Taekwondo, and even now I wish I would have stuck with the martial arts. It seemed like such a large intrusion in my life when I was a teen, but I would be in much better shape now if I had. :(

As far as an overbearing parent, I've never had that issue when it comes to sports. Even when I went to sporting events I never saw an angry or screaming father/mother. This guy should really quit his biatching and get over it.

    I have 2 rules

    1. You will do some activity( sport, drama, chess club, hell I don't care)
    2. Once you start you will finish out the season/year

It's great to try different things within limits. If you are 5 foot tall( and not going to grow much more) though I am not signing you up for Basketball. You have to have a legit chance to excel at least.
