From Sunday's Orlando Sentinel, Tim Povtak's column. It looks like even if Houston got the 18th pick, it would go to Vancouver instead of the Rockets keeping it. Can a pick have so much wonder and hype arround it? -------------- In a very complex situation, the Detroit Pistons are lobbying the Magic now, trying to persuade them not to exercise an option on a first-round draft pick that the Magic could get from Phoenix, even though the pick would go immediately to Houston (to satisfy an earlier obligation) and then on to Vancouver. The Pistons will benefit if the Magic don't exercise that option because then Detroit will be entitled to Vancouver's first-round pick in 2002 instead of the mediocre pick it would get if the Magic exercise the option. The Grizzlies are lobbying the Magic to exercise the option. The Magic have until June 5 to make the decision, and the Pistons are dangling some interesting bait, which could lead to the return point guard Chucky Atkins to Orlando. I thought we would have a choice on whether or not we kept the pick. If we do have to forward the pick to Vancouver automatically that would really stink! ------------------
I am thinking the Rockets and Grizs have a trade in the works, sending #13 and #18 to the Griz for #6. Why would the Grizs do this you might ask? Becuase this #18 has arguably the value of a top 10 pick next year, in additon to the talent level being great. The Grizs move down 7 spots, and are able to keep their lottery pick for next season. The only team that can offer something greater is only the Celtics. I don't know what type of relationship the Magic has with the Rockets, but lets hope CD can persuade them to send that pick. SO lets hope draft day the Rockets will have the #6 and #23. Perfect spot to take either Battier or White! ------------------
'Twould be nice. I wonder who we would actually grab at #6. Others postulate Woods would be a good center for this team. Battier might or might not be there. Maybe Pau Gasol, if he would play this year. By the way, mfclark, nice catch on the sentinel thang. ------------------
If Detroit persuades Orlando to keep the #18 pick, then what is the situation with this pick for the Rockets next year or the year after? By what date do they have to award the pick and will it get better or worse? ------------------
It appears that they are also throwing chucky atkins into the mix to try to manipulate ORLAND from sending the pick onward. Does houston or Vancouver have anything bait to throw into the mix to appease Orlando? ------------------
Well, it would seem Detroit would have to give Orlando something...otherwise why would Orlando help an Eastern Conference foe maneuver for a better pick next year?? It just wouldn't make sense unless Detroit made it worth their while.. ------------------ "I didn't like jr. high when I was there. Why would I want to watch it on tv?" P. The funny thing about all of this is that if we do get the 18th pick and forward it to the Grizz, after they forward it to Det then Det could turn around and fwd it back to us to satisfy a pick that they owe us! How funny would it be if we ended up with the 6, 18 and 22 picks in the draft for doing nothing! ------------------
crash, you're making me drool... though it seems to me that the trade would look more like: Hou - gets 6th and 27th pick from Vancouver Van - gets the 13th, 18th and 22nd pick from Hou Det - gets the 18th pick from Houston... Now if Detroit sent that pick back to Houston do you think a 6th, 18th and 27th pick would help the Rockets move up more or that their target would be available at 6? ------------------ The terminally ill need to learn that you can have fun without all the drugs.
It's not without precedence to do something like that, especially where the Magic are concerned. In 1990, Seattle held the #2 overall pick and Orlando the #4 overall pick. So fearful of Seattle taking the guy they wanted at number 2, Orlando sent 1st and 2nd round draft picks to Seattle. In the end, both teams got the guys they wanted. Orlando got their man in Dennis Scott. Seattle got some scrub by the name of Gary Payton. It could backfire on a number of teams, but I could see Detroit sending Chucky Atkins back to Orlando just to have them not take the pick, especially if they want to groom Cleaves as the point there. ------------------
Your scenario is more believable than mine. The 6th, 27th and possably the 18th pick would be great. I would think 6th would be high enough to get Battier if the Rox really wanted him that bad. I think the real wild card in all of this though is Jerry Krause and the Bulls. Who can guess what they might do. Last year their draft made absalutely no since. They could have drafted Chris Mihm to go with Brand in the post and could have picked up either Miller, DerMarr Johnson to shore up their front court or went with Alexander at the 2. Instead they draft Fizer when they already have Brand what was that about? So I think 6 is a good spot to draft if you can figure out what Krause is going to do at 4 or if you want Griffen. If Battier gets picked by the Bulls and we cant move up further to get Griffen then I don't like the 6th spot as much. Curry, Brown, Diop and Griffen will be gone in the top 5. I would rather have Woods than Chandler but it is starting to look like Woods might be available near the end of the lottery. If Battier is gone before 6 and we can't move up to grab Griffin then I would see if Detroit would be willing to trade the 9 and 18th (if they have not already givin it back to us) for the 6. That would give us 9, 18 and 22. And a shot at the following: 9 Woods 18 Cisse 27 Morris or 9 Joe Johnson 18 Haywood 27 Cisse or Ken Johnson If we kept the 6 and 27 6 Battier 27 Ken Johnson or Teyshaun Prince or trade everything for Griffin! ------------------
