Hey everyone... I've been kicking the idea around of starting a historical ootp4 league for a while now, and am prepared to start soon, if there's enough interest. The league would start shortly after 1900, and we'd continue through the modern era. We could either have players emerge with the teams they "really" did, or we could have drafts. We won't have free agency until it historically existed. I need you guys, sim-leaguers only, to vote on one of the following options: A. Start the new historical league, and trash the current one. B. Start a new historical league, and keep the current one... somewhat less frequent simming this way in each particular league. C. Let's not start one quite yet. Let me know... also, I'd like some feedback on how we should assign teams. There weren't many teams back then, so some people wouldn't be able to play in the new one. I need ideas on who should get to play, and how teams should be distributed.
Lets start the historical league and keep the old one. Owners should keep their teams from the old league. If an owner is displaced, he can request a team based on a combination of how active the owner is, how successful the owner has been, and how long the owner has been in the league.

Option B The owners that should get to play in the historical, IMO, are the ones that are the most active in the regular league.
I would like that. I would rather do one baseball sim or the other, not both. I would probably prefer to do the old one Divy up teams to the GM's that want them, I guess, I'm not sure enough GM's are active that there would be people left over. I'd like to be the Philadelphia Athletics , but I would like to suggest putting new talent in the league with a draft(ie - start with historical rosters, but put new talent in a draft(like the Big Train, Shoeless Joe, Babe, Gherig, etc, etc), instead of allocating them to their historical teams, to make things interesting, otherwise the league gets predictable, and rather boring, imo.
I love old time baseball but never played sim. Not sure if I would like it. Bill James runs a Old Time Fantasy Baseball League which I thought about joining.
Yea, I'm definitely more interested in keeping the current sim going. If I had to choose one or the other, I would go with the current one.
either A or B is fine with me. Nomar-in those days a bunch of these teams dont exist-so it isnt exactly fair to say he keeps his old team if it isnt around
Option B. An idea for giving out the teams would be that we could each vote for a number of other owners besides ourselves that we think are the most active to get teams. In other words, if they're are only 15 teams, each current owner can pick 15 others who they think are most qualified to be in the historical sim and own a team.
I don't think option B is going to work... I realize a lot of GM's are probably tired of the current league so I'm going to vote option A.
I think I would prefer Option A but would like to finish the current season at least. I think we should also re-pick teams. I mean under Nomars plan and the voting plan I would probably be able to get a new team but I also thought I was a lock to get into Fadeaway's baseball league and you guys all see how my team is doing there . I also like Pueds idea about starting with the rosters and putting new talent in a draft. I too agree it would be very predictable after a bit to know who would be on what team and so forth. Also how do the team markets work in a classic sim. DO they still use that to determine how much you can offer people and is it possible to turn off Free Agency. I have not played a retro league on my OOTP4 yet. I was planning on trying that out next week. CK
How about this. Team's can choose 5 players which the team drafted originally over the entire franchise to automatically draft them as rookies. All other players are entered into each year's draft.
I vote for B or C. The problem with going to just the historical league is that we'd leave people out. Alot of people, actually. There just weren't many teams back in the day. I do think a historical league will be fun, whenever we start it. As for Pued's plan, makes perfect sense to me. There's something cool about being able to draft Babe Ruth or Joe DiMaggio or Walter Johnson or Lou Gherig. And it adds fairness to the league. I think the owner of the Philadelphia Athletics or the Washington Senators or the Chicago White Stockings should have as much of a shot at these great players as the Yankees owner does.
I got to thinking about this last night, and I'm wondering if this would be a good solution: Castor - you have the game right...even with the historical feature option? Why not let Castor (if he wants to do it) run either our existing league or the new historical league and let haven run the other. Because like Sammy said, there were only like 16 teams, and I counted I think 23 people in our league right now. I always thought that we wanted to keep adding more new people to our league, so that every team was human-controlled. However, with fewer teams, someone or someones are going to get pissed. Besides, I think it would be interesting to see the careers of Sixto, Martin, and Dick progress, as well as how long will it take haven to turn the Pirates around and if Nomar can get back in the World Series soon.
I vote for C. Most people at least from what I've seen are still very interested in the current league. And an old league would leave a lot of people out, and as the newest GM, I would probably be one of the one's left out. I would vote for B, but it would divide people's attention, and it would give us 2 "halfassed" leagues rather than 1 good league.
I'm fine with whatever the league decides, although using a time machine to transport Casey Kotchman doesn't seem out of the question.
