While working out at the gym this morning, I heard a new radio ad that made me laugh aloud hysterically and caused a bunch of semi-strangers (faces I see every morning burning calories alongside me, but whose names I will never know) stare at me in wonderment.

Apparently either the NFL and / or the City of Houston has grown tiresome of all the cackling received about housing the NFC Champions in the Greenspoint area. To counter the negative publicity, someone (again either NFL and / or CoH) has created an approximately 45 second long radio commercial, which I heard on 610 AM for the first time this morning.

The commercial has two gossiping ladies discussing how bad the Greenspoint area is, by using puns and word-plays based on football terminology. Lots of jokes along the lines of "I heard some out-of-towners were in Greenspoint last week and had to rush for safety when walking down the street."

The gossiping ladies continue in this fashion, while throwing in small giggles at the same time.

Suddenly a booming voice of an announcer comes on and says something to the effect that... "Sure, we've all heard the myths, fables, stories and gossip about the NFL selecting Greenspoint to house the NFC champions. But if the area is good enough for the NFL, it must be great!"

That's when I officially lost it!

I heard this commercial as well and doubled over laughing. I suppose that next we will hear a commercial stating "Pasadena: cleanest air in the state of Texas". :D

Shouldn't they have housed one team in down town and the other in the Galleria area there.

You would think that would be the logical idea. I don't know what they were thinking by putting the NFC and all of their reporters by Gunspoint. I just hope that the reporters don't give the Houston area too much negative national press or it will really effect are chances of hosting antoher Super Bowl in the future.

BTW, I heard that Hugh Hefner rented out the entire Hotel Derek for Super Bowl weekend. I wonder if they're hiring?

I don't blame the City for using major events to revitalize areas. Do you remember where the Olympic Village was for the Houston Olympic bid? Galleria? Nope. Near Reliant? Nope. Downtown? Close. Third Ward? Yep.

At Half Price Books over the weekend, I was thumbing through a book about the history of shopping malls and found a chapter on the phenomenon of dead malls. The picture on the first page of chapter was Greenspoint Mall.

From the Houston Press last week:

Greenspoint says it's just as good as the Galleria, darn it

Some observers were shocked that the Dallas Cowboys put on such a pathetic performance in the NFC wild-card game January 3. (Right-thinking people, however, were simply pleased.)
Analysts offered lots of reasons for the collapse, but none mentioned this: Would you want to come to Houston's Super Bowl if it meant staying at a hotel in Greenspoint?

The AFC champions will be housed at the InterContinental in the lively, flashy, flamboyant Galleria area come Super Bowl week. For some reason, the NFC champs will be relegated to that bleak landscape north of town that's been known as Gunspoint because of its formerly high crime rate.

AFC shopping: The Galleria, where the ladies' clothing boutiques include Gucci and Chanel. NFC shopping: Greenspoint Mall, where women shop at Lane Bryant and Fashion Cents.

Greenspoint officials are eager, however, to let folks know that their part of town is so happenin' it's known as The Downtown of North Houston, which sounds like a very hip place indeed. If you're from a sleepy suburb of "North Houston."

The Wyndham Greenspoint Hotel invited the media out January 7 to see how they'll be "rolling out the green carpet" to welcome the NFC champs. To show how much the players eat, they brought out a giant grouper that was, we guess, pretty big as far as groupers go.

Thinking that Big Fish might not be enough of a lure, they also offered NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen, who said the hotel was "beautiful" and would be "the epicenter of excitement" during Super Bowl week.

Allen said he'd been hanging in Houston the last few days with pal Clyde Drexler, playing golf. "And I've been around the Galleria area, just having fun," he said.

Okay. But what about the Greenspoint area, Marcus? What hot spots have you hit in The Downtown of North Houston?

"I really haven't been around here that much," he said. "But they're giving me a tour later, and I'm looking forward to it."

Here's a tip, big guy: Be sure to bring your coupons for the Quizno's in the mall food court.

Apples & oranges - multi-million dollar development in the case of the Olympics vs. slapping a bunch of out-of-towners in hotels. How exactly is this going to revitalize the Greenspoint area?

I don't see what the big deal is. Greenspoint is not really the center of culture or even a very fun place, but it isn't an area to avoid either. It's not like the players will be forced to stay in the Greenspoint area the whole week. They can drive downtown or Montrose or Galleria or whatever whenever they want. I might prefer to be housed there myself -- the AFC guys will have to fight through traffic whenever they leave the hotel, no matter where they're going. The NFC guys can hop on 45 or barren 59 and get just about anywhere they want without gridlock. I suppose if they really need to buy some Chanel before the Superbowl, they will have to go into the Galleria, but otherwise, what's good about it? I work in the area and it doesn't do anything for me. Plus, Greenspoint is close to the airport so they can get the hell out of Dodge if they get their asses handed to them.

People are blowing this way out of proportion.

It's a great hotel in a safe portion of Greenspoint. It will take all of 30 minutes to transport the team to the practce/game facilities.

The only person i hear talking about it is John McClain, who looks at everything froma media perspectie, which fans couldn;t possibly care less about.

Who gives a crap what hotel the media stays in, what stadium has the best media food spread, or has the biggest media boxes. McClain needs to wake up and realize that no one but him gives a crap about any of that.

You're right it is not exactly the samething, but the visitors will pump money into the Greenspoint economy, and that is what I don't have a problem with.

Actually I read somewhere that the media headquarters will be the new Hilton downtown. That's going to be a good place to try to get autographs because that's where all the radio (Jim Rome, etc) will be broadcasting from there.
