Don't laugh, alost every former Knick player and coach from JVG v1.0 has made his way here at some point. This seems like a natural fit.
Dude, In the "Coach of the Year'" We had some long winning streak WITHOUT HAKEEM (Cartright knocked him out). Otis Thrope and Kenny Smith were the dyanamic Dou like Magic and Kareem. It was a great year, until we lost to the Lakers in the 1st round.
Larry Smith was the bomb that year. I loved that team - they just drew a tough Lakers squad in round 1 and couldn't get homecourt because the West was so tough back then.
I agree. A new assistant coach isn't going to change the way JVG coaches, especially if he is brought on w/o JVG's approval. JVG will never change his approach to the game, he is stubborn like that, it is part of his persona. Knowing this, I believe things won't change that much under JVG. We will still be seeing the low-score, boring games, win or not, as long as JVG is at the healm.
Coach of the Year - the kiss of death. JVG for Coach of the Year! errr... do they do these things at the break, yet? He needs an award and beheading, preferably at the same time, but I can't wait the whole season to watch the guillotine do it's job.
He was the worst coach that I can remember though my memory of Rockets coaches is clear only back to Bill Fitch. The only reason he won the coach of the year thing was because of the Hakeem-less winning streak but I'm fairly sure that he had nothing at all to do with it. My memory of what really happened is that all of the players really stepped up and played as if their backs were to a wall. The one thing I remember with absolute clarity about Cheney was his complete inability to make adjustments durring games when it was necessary, and he was inflexable with his substitutions. Also, when I've heard him do interviews, he does seem like a nice and friendly guy, but I get the distinct impression that he's not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. Don Cheney back with the Rockets is about my worst nightmare.
you know what is scary? I would rather read a dozen worthless tinman topics than one more lanqiu1 topic. at least tinman seems to have a demented sense of humor....just not a lot of brains.....seems fitting considering his nick. and to get ontopic.... Don Chaney? are you nuts? no thanks....I would rather have Big Chief Triangle over Don... but if I were to have to choose a coach....considering who is out there.....I would go with Del. He could hardly do worse dont ya think?
I agree with this. After getting the COTH award, didn't he get canned after losing back-to-back-to-back to the clippers, Timberwolves, and Mavericks in '91 ?? Someone please prove me wrong on this one... I have been watching my ROX since the days of YORE with Buck Johnson and Mike Woodson...
dude, there's more substance in my post than in Carmelo's back pack, Roy Tarpley's house, and across the street from Michael Ray Richardson. Let me BOOM you. 1. I was the FIRST TO SAY JUWAN SUCKS.. result: DNP last game 2. I was the FIRST TO SAY this team lacks motivation.. look at each game 3. I told you Dikembe would play well 4. I told you Sura would make a difference ... Already took out Carmelo 5. I told you Vernon was a great guy.. look Ron Artest took Vernon off NBA infamy I'm here for the Rockets fans. Can't stop it don't drop it!
I'm saying he would make a good assistant coach. I'm sure Patrick Ewing helped Yao find some girls at the Mens Club, but Yao's game has tanked and I blame Ewing. What else is his role besides helping Yao? Is he cutting Jeff Van Gundy's hair?
OK, yeah. I was always picturing Yao going: "Uh, Patrick... I've seen the '94 Finals video... I don't think that move will work..."
What has this guy done for the Rockets? When we had Larry Smith, he emphasized rebounding and tough defense. At least with Chaney we have a REAL coach as an assistant. Im not going to knock Van Gundy cause our team made the playoffs last year. The only complaint I have is that our offense is hard to watch . All of you hated watching "ISO CUTTINO, ISO STEVE", but Rudy was merely using his best players.
