    Ok I have encountered a very irritating problem.

    I have Comcast 6mb/512kbps internet. I have a netgear WGR614 G router. One desktop connected by ethernet and a laptop.

    After I set this up a month ago I ran speed tests on both computer and got 5mb down / and 1.8mb up (i know the up is high, it's cause comcast has that powerboost or something where it's fast in the beginning and it averages out).

    Out of nowhere now my laptop only gets 1.5 down but still has the same upload.

    On my ethernet computer
    Your Throughput
    Download = 5.576 Mbps
    Upload = 1.721 Mbps

    Now on my wireless
    Your Throughput
    Download = 1.452 Mbps
    Upload = 1.737 Mbps

    So I connected my laptop through ethernet and got what my desktop was getting. I brought my friends wireless adapter and checked the speed and still not getting anything over 1.5

    I tried a different router (linksys wrt54g) and got the same "slow" speeds. I took my laptop to my friends house and got 2.5down/490kbps up on his ATT DSL.

    I changed channels on my router to all possible 11. I used the program Netstumbler to locate which networks are using what.

    I resetted the router to factory settings, updated firmware. nothing.

    i am stumped. can anyone help?

    it's pretty obvious. either your router is giving a weak signal or your laptops wifi is weak.

    i have a linksys internal pci 2.4ghz wireless adapter and a external usb 2.4ghz wireless adapter. some odd reason, the internal pci sucks donkey nuts. the usb on the other hand is flawless. in other words, try swapping your wifi adapter on your laptop.

    well windows says my connection is excellent. i tried the laptop next to the routers. i am getting like a 80%+ signal. -20dBm.

    i dont get how my download is only affected and not the upload.

    i don't think it's the internet (be it cable or dsl). i currently have both in my home and have tried both with my laptop with no problems. cable is through the motorola surfboard with linksys wrt54g router and the dsl uses a 2wire wireless dsl gateway.

    80% signal when your next to the router is pretty bad. i get 100% and im on the other side of the house with a couple of walls and a microwave sandwiched between us. i still think it's a wireless adapter problem, but it could be something else.

    btw: which security method are you using? on my linksys i have it set up with wpa2 and on the 2wire its default is wep.

    well i used to get the same speeds my desktop was getting... it's not like i was never able to get this speed. just all of

    i dont know how to find this interference since nothing in my house has changed.

    chow: i did try another wireless card and same results.

    i dont have wep or wpa i just don't broadcast ssid and i do mac filtering.

    laptop at friends house: tested
    new router: tested
    new wireless card: tested

    to test:
    comcast modem at friends house
    friends laptop at my house

    i was doing some ping and tracert on google/yahoo...some of the steps in tracert are timing out on both wireless and wired.

    Check to see if the power for the wireless nic is lower than 100%. Different "profiles" (off battery, on battery, etc), may lower the power to the NIC. Go into device manager, the properties window for your wireless card ... the advanced tab, you'll have a lot of properties ... ensure all values match the best performance.

    How secure is the router? Is it wide open without any keys?

    Even though this router says 'g', it's backwards compatible with 'b'. If someone is connecting to the router with a B wireless card, the router will automatically throttle all connections down to that speed.

    There should be a spot in the wireless config page to check who is connecting to the router.

    NetGear has a history of screwing up so it probably is your router. Lots of hardware glitches that slow down or stop things. Try unplugging and replugging it like 50 times, cause calling service will end you up with the most Indian mofo you've ever heard and you won't understand a word he says.

    Are you able to try the wireless NIC in the desktop?
