Great idea, they need a coach with a positive outlook and a sense of humor to brighten up the mood for the players. That Jeff guy should help them with recruiting free agents and mentoring the high pick they will be getting.

JVG is an excellent coach. Any franchise would be lucky to have him...

Gundy is a super coach. what he teaches on defense is priceless. little things that often is overlooked by 99% of other coaches. ewing, mcgrady, spree, houston, ward and few others have called him the best coach they've ever had.

yea, I think JVG can help them win big next year, they had talent, but with defense they can really make a big stride. Only problem with this, high scorers don't like to play with JVG, he is known to be really tight and stubborn on his offense which might turn off some stars. Then again, I still feel he can make this team a winner.

C'mon man, winning is the great equalizer. It doesn't matter how strict you are, if you give your team a lot of success you'll end up with players flocking to you anyhow (Larry Brown, Pat Riley, Pop are all known to be strict coaches but they have good rep to players). More importantly having JVG there would do wonders for Brook Lopez's development. He and JVG could actually become a slightly inferior version of Duncan and Pops.

Oh, this is a topic about Van Gundy and not Mark Jackson? Mark Jackson makes me lol really hard.

How would JVG help Lopez's development? I don't think he really did much to help Yao, at least offensively. Yao seemed to have a lot more creativity to his game as a rookie before JVG came along.

That's a joke, right? A "slightly inferior" version of Duncan and Pops? I will remind you that as a second year player TD was leading his team to an NBA title, while Lopez spent his second season putting up good numbers on a team that challenged for the worst record in league history.

JVG might be a slightly inferior version of Pops, but Lopez is not and never will be in the same league as Duncan.

I think JVG is a good coach, but he is also very smart, he won't want to take on anything that is a money pit scenario.

IMO, it will all depend upon whether he thinks they can contend with what they have.....

He has it pretty cushy right now, can't blame him for waiting for the perfect opportunity.

Now, all that could change if Captain Russia tosses him a boatload of cash.....

JVG made Yao a 25-10-2 beast, until he got hurt.

It's really the "2" I'm referring to (if you meant assists). Looking at Yao his rookie year, I thought he seemed to be quite a talented passer, but he was never used as such in JVG's offense. He averaged 0.8 assists per game in JVG's second year as coach!

If he coaches, i bet he calls up washed-up rocket point guards ;) and power forwards.

    Franchise and Mo-tay anyone?

So you would have preferred JVG to have turned his 7'6 center into a passer as opposed to the focal point of the offense? Yao played his best year, scoring wise, under JVG. Complaining about his assist is nitpicking.

jvg is a GREAT coach, the nets are rebuilding and they should start with a coach that is high on defence.

Yup. When you have a skilled 7'6 Center that can score down low every time, you put him in the high post and turn him into a Point Center. Forget the fact that he takes high percentage shots. Let's utilize that he's has good passing for a Center. Any point guard problems would easily be solved with Yao running the show.

I think that Russian guy should be the coach.

    Here's his pregame speech:

"Play well and you get to party on my yacht with my rented supermodels, play poorly and I introduce you to my friends from KGB."

I think it all depends. JVG pretty much let MerGady do whatever he wants on offense.

However that's if the "scorer" is a first option like MerGady was. Didn't work well with scorers like Frenchfries who couldn't play second fiddle to Yao.

So it all depends on who JVG decides is the first or second option. If the Nets get LerBon (I doubt it), then I wouldn't worry about the offense. JVG could almost entirely focus on the team's defense.

They could have had more movement in the offense and utilized Yao's passing somewhat. Also, Yao often got fatigued from having to fight for low post position every time down the court.
