I want to get a friend a birthday present, and she wants the latest CD by "Deftones". I know f*** all about them. Does anyone know what genre they fall under? What is the name of their latest album?

    Anyone?

    Thanks.

deftones is pretty good. their latest single is "minerva"...haven't heard it tho..lol. i like 2 songs of theirs--"my own summer (shove it)" from the matrix 1 soundtrack. that was a great song. the other is "change (in the house of flies)" which is good also.

the first is basically hard metal, the second is more of a power ballad...if you can even classify it as that. just modern rock/heavy metal i guess.

why does everyone categorize "hard rock" as "heavy metal" nowadays? All these modern groups (meaning non 80s and non early 90s) who downtune their guitars and don't play crazy finger blistering solos are "nu-metal".

Anyways...deftones fans...which one of you guys think the singer for Chevelle sounds exactly like the singer for Deftones?

The only Deftones album worth a crap is "Adrenaline". The rest of them were kind of a disappointment, IMO. And yes, the lead singer of Chevelle does sound similar to Chino Morenos (lead singer of Deftones).

I think most people's opinions on the Deftones are the opposite of yours, Red Chocolate. Adrenaline is far inferior to their later releases, and is amateur at best. It sounds like the efforts of a hardcore band just learning how to play instruments real loud.

ZRB, Deftones is usually classified as nu-metal, a label that makes most cringe, the band themselves included. They pioneered the sound, along with Korn. Difference between the two being that the Deftones are still good, whereas Korn became a parody of themselves only after their first album.

While the Deftones often do use the crunchy guitar sound, it doesn't sound forced or derivitive, like say, Hoobastank of PUddle of MudD. They don't depend on it, and have other ways of getting their point across.

Their popular songs: Change (In the House of Flies), Seven Words, and Shove It happen to be bad examples of their work. Be Quiet and Drive is a great one, on the other hand, and pretty much sums up why most people love em in the first place.

dn1282, that Chevelle song "The Red" sounds pretty good...until he gets to the weak, horrendous chorus. Their voices aren't really the same, I think it's more the quiet/loud dynamic that's similar. That's like saying Kurt Cobain and Johnny Nickelback sound exactly the same.

I heard a version of the Deftones covering Holiday by Weezer. Pretty sweet.
