Hopefully one of you home theatre buffs out there can help me out with this. I recently bought a new Sony tv and surround sound system. For some reason or another I am unable to get DTS working through my system. I have hooked up my dvd player to the sound reciever using the provided digital coax cable. I spoke with someone from Sony and they said I have to buy a different type of cable for 5.1 to work. Does that sound right? Every where else I look it sounds like that is the only cable I would need. If I play a movie using DTS, I cannot hear any sound. If I select Dolby, the movie plays but the reciever says it is using Dolby Pro Logic II. Is that the same thing as 5.1? Any help is appreciated, I'm clueless here.
Harrisment, Are positive that the DVD that you are playing has DTS??? Most DVD movies have Dolby Digital 5.1 capabilities, but not all have DTS. In fact, very vew have DTS.
Yeah. It's a special edition so I guess thats why it has both. If I go into the audio option I can choose either Dolby 5.1, Dolby 2.0, or DTS 5.1 . If I select the Dolby's, I get sound. If I select DTS nothing comes out.
Yep...well at least I assume so. It has a DTS logo on the front of it. Anyone know of some good home theatre forums I could post this question to?
Home Theater Forum You might check the back of the DVD player or your manual to make sure there isn't a switch to indicate whether you want to use digital coax or an optical cable to pass your audio. DTS may be assigned to the optical output while digital coax might be assigned to the digital coax. I dunno, though. It's just a guess. It sounds like either your DVD player isn't passing the signal or your receiver is not switching to DTS mode to handle it. As far as I know, either digital coax or optical should work for both audio formats.
Damn, there's pretty much a forum for every specific need. Let me try something...anyone know of a good maize growing forum?
Surfguy is right. I've never heard of a special cable for DTS signal. I have a sony receiver, and I too have a digital coax cable and I get DTS just fine when its available. What model Sony do you have Harris?
I can't just take the first offer that comes to me, can I? Hey, I don't have your email addy here at work, email me at behad@yahoo.com so I can update you on the thing at the thing with the thing.
This one right Here In the manual it says make sure your input mode is not set to analog if you try to use DTS. I haven't figured out where to change that, but even so I'm pretty sure it's not set to analog. When I choose dolby it says "Digital" on the display of the reciever, so I know the digital is at least working for that.
On the DVD menu, did you select DTS under the audio setup option???? Also, check your DVD player documentation. Make sure there is not a setup feature that disables or enables it to decode the DTS.
That did it! It turns out there is an audio setup on the dvd player itself. I thought you only had to set it on the movie. DTS was turned off, so I enabled it and it works. Thanks man!
How do you like that model? I was thinking about picking it up, but wasn't sure I'd be happy with the sound/options.
Just out of curiosity, which DTS DVD are you playing? If it's Saving Private Ryan, you better warn the neighbors.
So far I really like it. You can't beat it for the price. It has plenty of power to fill up my living room. The only thing I'm not happy with though is my new tv. I bought a 51 inch Sony Rear Projection wide screen set. Movies look amazing, but when watching sports it just doesn't look right to me. The close up shots are good, but when the camera pans out (example: when a pitcher is making a pitch) the images look fuzzy. I can't make out numbers on jerseys, faces are fuzzy, etc. I'm not sure if that is just the case with projection tv's or not. I'm thinking about returning it for a different set, but I'm not sure how difficult that will be.
I was watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Nothing like watching Johnny Depp in a full blown ether binge with surround sound cranked up!
