OK, a co-worker of mine asked me to look at her computer. She said that the computer isn't going online and she has dialup. She said it started after her son installed a program that got rid of sbybot's and adware. They then uninstalled the program and, of course, the internet still didn't work. I took it home, did some research and figured it had to be a spybot that attached itself somewhere messing something up and then, when the program was uninstalled, it was permently screwed. So, I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP thinking that this would fix everything. But, it didn't. I have since moved the modem to different slots and tried another modem and it still says it is not getting a dial tone. I've pretty much have given up so I come to the great minds of the BBS. Does anyone know what is going on so that I can fix it?

    Lots of thanks in advance.

Oh sorry. Yea, the modem was not getting a dial tone before I re-installed Windows as well.

If you have another modem lying around, check to see if the original is busted.

push the phone cable into the modem jack harder. (and make sure it's the correct modem jack)

    ugh... modems....

I remember being excited about getting my 300 baud so that I could log onto BBS's (back before the internet)...

    don't miss 'em

yea, sounds like a modem issue, either update the drivers or replace the modem.
