I do minor IT work for some our clients and one of them want to have an ethernet cable dropped within a wall and have a plate installed. The cable is currently hanging above the ceiling tiles and coming down the ceiling. I am wondering if anyone have any expertise on this and help me out.

not sure what they are called, but they make some type of special tool that you can run up the wall, through the plate and grab it in the ceiling and pull it back down

Im pretty sure Fry's or Altex would have it

Might just want to put the hole in the wall where the plate goes, and then drop the line down from the ceiling and just grab it ...unless there is insulation

Fish tape can be used. You can do exactly what you suggest, then reel it back in once the cable is attached. It can be found at Lowes or Home Depot.

If it is an interior office wall (no insulation in the way) the easiest way is to just cut a hole where you want the faceplate and drop a string down with something heavy attacked to it (ie snips/scissors). Fish Tapes can get pretty pricey, so if you don't have to buy one or you won't use it often improvise.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll see if I can do it with Svpernaut's method. If not, I guess I'll have to purchase a fish tape. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

also beware to install the proper riser cable... Theres 3 different types of cables when it comes to ethernet. Different type is all flamable which produces toxic gases. Another type ( Riser Cable ) Fire doesnt not rise on the cable so if it is somehow caught on fire it won't rise. Check with Firedepartment Building codes on which one you need. Or you will be liable if they find out you installed the incorrect one.
