    So here it goes.....

On New Year's day, I told my Boss that I was moving to Houston in about 6 weeks. We were cool with each other and I wanted to give him enough time to find my replacement. His reaction at first was "Hey man I understand, you do what you got to do" but as the weeks went on, he started being an a$$. I found out from another manager that he was pissed because he had a vacation lined up for mid February because his vacation refreshed from the beginning of the fiscal year. Anyway, we got into it a few times and in mid February the loss prevention district manager conducted an audit in our store. The LPDM found some items that were supposed to be ordered through our company portal but I remember my boss asking me to go and purchase these items with petty cash, which I replied "cool but make sure you order these ahead of time next quarter" Well the LPDM questioned me about it and I immediately told him that my boss gave me a verbal okay to pick these up. Well, my boss completely denied it (to save his a$$) On top of that the petty cash receipts were missing, in which I gave him once I arrived at the store with the items (about $400 dollars worth) Well, sorry for the long story, but unfortunately I was terminated and my boss just sat there like it wasn't a big deal (obviously because I was leaving anyway) Now I'm back in Houston and I've been recently looking for work, savings almost depleted, and I've had friends call my previous employer to see what my former boss would say and it wasn't good at all. I can't believe he's bad mouthing me. So here's ultimately my question. Should I omit this employer off my application? I know I can omit it off my resume but what are the chances that it will pop up during a background check related to my salary? I worked there for exactly 11 months and can explain the time gap with a future employer (I had a side business) When my future employer calls the store, I know what he's going to say AND I was terminated technically on top of that. The other manager's that work there I wasn't particularly cool with so I'm not confident that they would vouch for me. What should I do? Again, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Interesting. I was recently told that a former employer cannot "bad mouth" you unless you list him/her as a reference. The former employer can only state facts such as position, last salary, length of employment, etc. I guess the former employer could let a prospective employer know that you were terminated instead of left on your own.

Don't know enough but I wanted to chime in with what I heard.

    1. Was this your most recent job? If so, your SOL unless....
    2. You can explain why you haven't been working in the past 11 months (e.g. school, family situation, etc.)
    3. A good amount of companies will give you the option to tell them whether or not you "allow" them to contact your former employer on the application
    4. If the reason for termination was something small (and not theft...not sure because of your hatred for paragraphs) and your employer is a big company, I'd look up the number for its HR department (or something similar) rather than putting your boss' number or your store's number down.
    5. Worst case, you're better off looking for a job at a mom and pop store that will listen to your side of the story and will give you a chance/job despite all that drama.

Do you have experience to make up for your last job?

Yes, this was my last job and I have tons of manager experience besides this employer.

I could thoroughly explain the gap during my time with this company. That wouldn't be an issue at all.

If the company is big enough, I would put down the HR/employee relations department's number for "previous manager" and "contact number". Sure they might still tell your prospective employer that you got terminated but at least the prospective employer won't get the extra "fluff" your manager would give them.

Just reread your first post. If you had a side business during your 11 months of employment, I would put that down rather than including this one blip on the radar.

OK okay, why did you leave the previous job?

Also, I'm afraid that checking the no box pertaining to contacting my previous employer would raise a red flag, thus hurting my chances of a quality position. The work I'm looking for would still be in retail management, geared towards a store manager position. I've been a store manager for two big-box retailers in the past.

If you're applying online the first thing the system is going to do is look for key words in your resume first. If those aren't there then you wouldn't even have to worry about those red flags. Of course you probably already knew that

I left the previous job before my last due to company outlook. The company was drastically reducing square footage in all brick and mortar locations, while incrementally driving it's e-commerce business. A slew of manager positions were being eliminated and unfortunately I could see the future....Circuit City.

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. I know what I want to (omit it off my application) but don't know if the background check that the future employer conducts, will show that I worked for an employer that I didn't list. Either way it's a gamble, but wanted my fellow clutch fans opinions (in which I respect and appreciate ;))

I've omitted a previous employer due to a termination for insubordination and that hasn't stopped me from getting job offers. Granted that position was so early in my professional career that it practically dropped off the radar.

Good luck. I'm sure we have many members on here that can give you better advice/suggestions than the ones I gave you.

I had 4 interviews last month. They will ask you about your last job so prepare for the red flag that you will raise. What excuse do you feel like giving them cause obviously the last one didn't care.

You're right! I'll omit it off my resume and application and eventually one job will fall through the cracks :p

If you are well prepared with the explanation of your side business I wouldn't think that it would be an issue if you omitted this job.
