    What up Amigos?

Hey I need some help with some new basketball shoes. So in the last two years my flat feet have been causing me more and more problems. Up until a few years ago I could wear any shoe on earth without a problem then all of a sudden one day everything hurts if I don’t use an insole designed for people with flat feet. I have them in all my dress and running shoes now.

Only problem is with my current pair of basketball shoes Nike Lebron Zoom 20-5-5 (Some Lebron’s I bought 4-5 years ago but have only used 15-20 times because they hurt) insoles are not helping. My podiatrist said no matter what I have to wear insoles and basketball is tricky because motion control shoes (flat footed people’s shoes) are made for runners but pretty much nothing is made for basketball.

So my first idea was to stick with good old New Balance. Sounds dumb but I am only 31 and can’t imagine the amount of clowning I would get if I rolled up in any of these?

Some of them are not horrible but man. They look like really old man shoes. I will get them if they are the best thing for my feet but I don’t want to look that old.

Anyone here suffer from flat feet (overpronation)? What do you all wear? Do you all use insoles?

I am looking to spend up to 120 on shoes. Maybe a more expensive pair and use a footlocker coupon. But I will be happy with a normal pair for 40-60. I only play ball every now and then.

You can tell by what I currently have it has been years since I bought shoes so some help with current ones would be appreciated.

Anyone play ball only in running shoes?

New Kobes are amazing! Not me promoting Kobe or Nike but read about the soles they put in these kicks. They're awesome

who cares what you wear, it's your game people will talk about. I played with some slip on sketchers once, no one said a damn thing once the game started

No offense, but it doesnt sound like youre out there being derrick rose or playing very often, so just wear your running shoes. I wore running shoes for years to play ball when i was younger and never had any issues. My two severe sprains came while wearing the 96 zoom flight Team USA pennys and the Nike air max CWs. The height of bball shoes is overrated...what you really need i just some solid sole padding since there's so much jumping involved.

Also, for pronation, this might help:

do the prone hip extension test illustrated there and see if it applies to you

I have two that I use for the gym, running around memorial.
First pair are true blue motion control shoes. Really comfortable, lots of support but as you can see are not that attractive. I call them my grandpa shoes.

My other pair are are a wide width New Balance 993. I got them at the NB outlet. There is always a coupon floating around for them. I would not pay 140 bucks for running shoes. Inside these I have the newest model of NB insoles for flat footed people. My podiatrist said the stuff mine are made out of are unreal materials and is amazed they were only 25 bucks.

These are the insoles. I got them for 20 or 25 bucks at the outlet.

I spoke to my buddy who is an orthopedic surgeon and he said not to wear running shoes for basketball. The type of jumping involved and the unpredictability of landing on some one else can do a lot of damage to your feet.

I have overpronation of my feet not hips.

I went to Luke's Locker and tried out several pairs and ran on the treadmill while they watched how my foot landed while wearing the shoes. I ended up getting a pair of Asics Gel-3020. Tried some Brooks and Saucony too. My advice would be to go to Luke's Locker and let them help you. I was getting arch pain before I went, I didn't even realize I had low arches. I haven't had any pain since.

Sorry, i should have explained... your hips are connected to your feet via bone and muscle chains and can therefore cause the overpronation your feet have. It's also possible to have too much ankle support, whether it's from a high top shoe, brace, or a combination. In this case, not only does your ankle weaken from being crutched, but it also forces your knee to move more in directions it's not suppose to or too far in it's allowed directions. This too can also cause overpronation down in your foot.

I can respect your buddy's advice...not everyone can pull off playing ball in non-basketball shoes, especially if they are already overpronated. I was mostly kidding about just going out there in anything, but people with healthy feet shouldn't really have problems, as long as the shoe isn't extremely thin, like a track shoe. Even with a basketball shoe you don't want an overly thick sole. You're more likely to screw up the foot's proprioception, which also can weaken muscles and or change your gait for worse. It will also promote a heel strike when you run, which a lot of players have because of the heavy heel padding in basketball shoes. Heel striking isn't good. It's "heavy landing". Yao ming does this.

As for the height of the shoe, the ankle isn't made to be immobilized like some high tops want to do, which is why there's more talk now about using mid or lower top basketball shoes...Kobe is an example of someone who uses them. Basketball shoes are also coming out with different cuts at the ankle to allow more mobility.I know your buddy's word means more because he's a professional and im just a poster on a forum, but youve got basketball pros like the Pistons' trainer, who has spoken out about high tops. You also have people like Nike, adidas, etc ,who stricly do research on basketball shoes, who are trying a different approach. Don't see it as my own personal advice, but advice from professionals who don't do anything besides work specifically with basketball. It's your health, explore all possibilities. If you really want high tops, at least go with some that are advertised as giving you ankle mobility not restricting it.

Maybe you can see the credibility in what i'm saying by checking out these links, but i do have some experience and education in the area, im not just spitting out google info :

Ideally you should check out your whole kinetic chain and make sure your overpronation isn't compensation for a problem higher up the chain. If this is the cause, then some physical therapy should solve your overpronation. Kiss orthotics, especial soles, shoes, etc., goodbye. Some orthopetics will not give you this option and will just tell you you're stuck. Not always the case. Again, it's your health, you owe it to yourself to check out every possibility.

Luke's Locker is great. So is Fleet Feet in the Village. They spend a lot of time talking to you about what type of shoes you need. The employees in the new balance outlet are pretty good too. I think you have a good employee when they will tell you no to an expensive pair of shoes and get you to get the ones meqnt for the way you walk.

Thanks for the advice and the time. My friend suggested 3/4 shoes like you suggested. I will check out the links you sent me when I get home.

I went to the Nike outlet and got some 2010 Team Jordans...

    ...Rockets colors of course

I have never wore a more comfortable pair of shoes. I went to every shoe outlet in Spring and these felt the best. I was hoping to pay 30-50 bucks. 89 bucks...oh well.

I have extremely wide (4E) and flat feet

I have always found that Air Force One's were the most comfortable for my feet
