I need an Austin area lawyer to help me out a bit. I went to some lawyers who were asking to charge $1000 for an expungement. Before I go lawyer hunting again, I thought I'd ask the legal members of the board if they had any recommendations or even would be willing to do it themselves. I don't want a handout, but is $1k really necessary?

Any and all help would be appreciated, thanks.

Honestly, I don't know if it's a civil or criminal lawyer I need. I just need someone who can take care of an expungement (clearing of arrest record) for less than $1k. Or any lawyer to tell me if $1k is a competitive rate for expungements ... or if they're just trying to rip me off out my ass.

I believe you can do an expungement yourself without hiring a lawyer. Go down to the courthouse and they should be able to tell you what forms you need to fill out and how much it will cost.
