Is there anything more useless and annoying than a necktie? I, personally, cannot stand wearing a tie. I just don't understand why it is still being worn today?

I remember when I first got out of school and got a job. I was praying that I didn't have to wear a tie. How much did I hate wearing a tie? So much, that I didn't even wear one to my job interview! I got the job (it was at a bank), and I found that the dress code was "business casual" meaning button down collared shirts and no jeans (except for Fridays and the half day on Saturday) and tennis shoes. They gave you an option, thank God, on wearing a tie. The funny thing is that of all the male employees (it was a credit union & 95% of the employees were women) probably only 2 out of maybe 16 wore a tie on a regular basis. It was the same way when I was in grad school as a teaching assistant. None of the other male TA's wore a tie and hardly did any of the professors.

When I got my current job in February 2000, I decided to play it safe and wear a tie to the interview with a jacket. I got the job and I remember asking my supervisor what the dress code was. He told me, "It's business casual but I expect my employees to wear a tie every day except on Fridays." I thought, "damn, I'm going to have to learn how to tie a tie!" However, being the lazy person that I am, I went and bought a couple of clip-on ties and used them instead. It took a while before anyone I worked with caught on to the fact that I was wearing clip-ons, but once they did, I got some grief in a good-natured way. I finally decided that if I could get a college degree in math, then I could learn to tie a tie. So, with some help from my father, I learned how to tie a tie and ditched the metal (the clip-ons).

However, these things are still uncomfortable as ****, and as soon as work is over, I immediately take my tie off. I do that without even thinking. I don't even wear ties to church on Sunday.

The dress code has loosened up a little bit, and I have not worn a tie on a Thursday in probably over 2 months. I still wish that they would just do away with these nooses because you can still look nice and professional, IMO, without wearing a tie. One reason that it has loosened up, the dress code that is, is because the guy that hired me has quit and taken another job. This one guy that I work with who despised my old boss used to make fun of him along with me because dude would have a fat-ass knot in his ties! Every morning when he would come in, I would always notice that fat-ass knot and start snickering. I think the knot he used was the Windsor knot.

Anyway, I would rather wear a tuxedo than a suit. I just don't like ties and I think that they should be abolished. That is the end of my rant. Tonight's game made that rant alot easier than I expected.

For a very long time, I did not own a tie. I actually wore a suit with a band-collar shirt to my wedding (in 1995) and had already rid myself of all my ties back in probably about 1993. I now own 1 tie that I bought because I had to speak to a couple of groups last year during the arena referendum.

Beyond that, I have one jacket and one pair of slacks. My daily attire is usually shorts or cargo pants and a t-shirt. Ahhhh...

I hate ties as well, but when you have the right tie, they do help your overall look immensely. It's like having to wear high heels all day. I'm sure the women hate it, but it sure does look good.

I don't think it is really an equivalent - high heels to ties. High heels, physically, shorten the leg muscles because standing on your toes is a natural stretch and create tension in the muscles tightening them up and making them look more lean an muscular.

Ties making you look better is really just subjective. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think wearing a tie makes you look goofy.

And while we're on the subject of heels, I cannot imagine how painful it must be to have to cram your feet into tiny shoes and balance on a little platform all day. Not only is it painful, but studies have shown it causes fairly serious foot and back problems if worn on a regular basis.

For me, the issue is not on what you wear but on what you are REQUIRED to wear. I hate dress codes. They are just annoying.

Love 'em. Own about 50 plus 2 bowties.

Just gave a bagful of older ones to Goodwill.

And yes, my job is business casual. No ties needed

So, you are one of those guys who gets ties for Christmas, says, "Wow! Thanks! I love it!" and actually <i>means</i> it! Cool! :)

I actually like ties. They can make you look sharp. However, they can make you look like a fashion tragedy as well. But, I never like being told that I have to wear one. My job doesn't require one, but I do wear them to church and any other occasion that would call for nicer-than-normal attire (weddings, funerals, etc.).

A tie is a visible symbol that you are a man,
    hence the "phallic" shape.
The bigger the tie, the "bigger" the man. ;)

I am lucky enough to work in a "business casual" sort of place that rarely requires me to wear ties except once or twice a month, but I don't see what the gripe is about them. Some of my ties look really cool.

The thing is, if you have to wear a suit everyday, you end up wearing nothing but navy, gray, black, brown, and tan. For the most part the only color, the only personality really added to the wardrobe, comes from the tie.

BTW, if the tie is uncomfortable, you're wearing it too tight. :)

When I first started work, I had to wear a tie, but now, since moving to America, I don't have to - its all polo shirts now!

However, i quite liked getting dressed smarter for work. In my opinion, ties make you look and feel more classy. I found that getting dressed into suit/tie for work put me in a "work" frame of mind, and conversely, on Friday night when I got changed into my casuals, I felt more relaxed and ready to party!

I love wearing suits, but I am not that fond of ties. I also have a mild case of hyper-hydrosis so ties and jackets dont really make a good combination for me.

Usually I wear a long sleeve t-shirt (the dressy kinds) or just a long sleeve shirt without a tie with my suits.

It would be cool if you wore a tie with your polo shirt. Oh, yeah!

I give about 3-4 public speeches a week, so I wear a tie when I do so. But I don't generally wear one when I'm at "work"--working on the speeches. If it's a nice tie and the shirt fits properly, I actually like them. But there's nothing like wearing a shirt that's just a little too tight around the neck. Ties don't bother me, only the too-tight shirt.

I got 103 neckties because I wanted to collect them and be cool when I could go to work everyday wearing a different tie, but now I am in construction/retail and all I do is look at them when I go home for the day...
