ROckets03- I think the main reason the ratings were down because the Finals were on the same night as "Survivor" and "Who wants to be a Millionaire" I wonder which one Quitten was watching ------------------ Proud owner of 271 different Hakeem Olajuwon Basketball cards
GREAT news. Imagine if it had been Portland instead of LA. A Portland/Indiana series would have had to be played in the wee hours of the morning on tape-delay! Maybe NBC won't bid on the NBA contract next time. ------------------ Too-Rye-Aye!
Maybe now everyone will realize why the Pacers have been cheated in the last 2 conference finals because of rating! The truth is infinite like math ------------------
I just saw the ratings report today and it got a 10.5 nationally compared to 11.4 last year. In New York, it received 8.3 compared to 16.9. Of course, the Knicks were in the finals and New York was all into that. Last year, the national rating, if I remember correctly, was 11.8. Now, doesn't this just further proves that there is no conspiracy? Big markets doesn't guarantee squat unless there is competition and fan appeal. The advertising revenue for last nights game was not that good. In fact, the cost for a 30 second commercial is down from 350,000 for a 30 second spot to about 320,000. The prelim prices that we had for a possible NY/LA final was 450,000 per 30 seconds. That is still way low from the high of near 670,000 back in 1996. The low ratings were not impacted at all by the other shows since the other shows did not impact the market the NBA is aiming for. Most people who watch NBA games, according to our research, are between 30-40 years old. The Survivor series is mostly aimed at 20 year olds and the Millionaire show is highest amongst the 40-49 year olds. If I was NBC, I wouldn't want LA in anymore finals since they are now part of 4 of the lowest 7 final ratings since 1984. They aren't making any money on this series which goes to prove that NBC and NBA are not scripting the games. ------------------ Live Rocketball. Breathe Rocketball. Die with Rocketball. You know what this really is? This is NBC's come-uppance. For years, they've over-emphasized the biggest markets and the players on those teams. The side effect of that is that they've raised a whole generation of young basketball fans who consider series between "non glamour teams" to be a disappointment. A let-down. A waste of time. NBA fans have been taught for years that the league revolves around the big media markets, and that the game at its pinnacle is some permutation matching them up. When a team other than the Big Three (or four/five, if you want to count Boston and Philly) crashes the party, you're entirely right to be disappointed because you're not supposed to care about Houston, or San Antonio, or Indiana. You're supposed to hang you posters of Jordan and Kobe and Shaq, and you're supposed to follow the NBA's favored teams as closely as you follow your own. You're expected to swallow **** and keep smiling. Well, in my opinion, these sagging rating couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of vacuous know-nothings than the NBA and NBC. ------------------ You bring the bullets, I'll bring the wine.
Thats pretty far-fetched Almu , I dont think only 30 year olds watch the Finals 40 years olds Million aire and 20 year olds survivor ------------------ Proud owner of 271 different Hakeem Olajuwon Basketball cards
This reminds me of a radio station in Austin, 96.7 KHFI. They play solely Top 40 music, and play it over and over again, so that even good songs become almost unbearable to listen to. Which of course is why they aren't one of the top rated radio stations. Ditto with NBC. They overreacted to the poor ratings stemming from the lock-out so that now they're shoving Kobe and Vince(and soon Steve) so far down are throats that even though they're all exciting players, its tough to watch them play cause you know that Bob Costas is gonna marvel at the incredible way they bounce the ball up and down. And it didn't help that they were opposite "Survivor" and "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" ------------------ Drop kick me Jesus through the goalposts of life, Tumble end over end, neither left nor right. Puedlfor -- Welcome to radio. Most stations are like that. BK has hit the nail on the head. That is the main reason why I can't stand the Lakers. How can I like something that the network tries to shove down my throat? I can't. I long for the good ole days, where stars got calls because they won rings, not because the league and network needed them to get calls for better ratings (imagine if Kobe had had the ball rather than Steve Smith on the play where Shaq hacked him at the end of the game). Notice how the NFL doesn't push one particular team. If you're in a certain area, you get a certain game, no matter who's playing. Almu, low ratings for the finals doesn't mean the league and NBC wouldn't prefer one team over another (notice I didn't say anything about a 'conspiracy'). As far as the league not wanting LA in the Finals, that is not true. Let me see if I can guess the 4 finals you're talking about: Lakers/Pistons '88 Lakers/Pistons '89 Lakers/Bulls '91 Lakers/Pacers '00 All that says is that nobody wanted to watch the Pistons, Bulls (Jordan's first finals), or Pacers. The Pistons were boring, plain and simple. Once Bird and Magic left and the NBA focused its marketing on Jordan, he became the meal ticket. I would also like to add that Magic went down in Game 3 of the Lakers/Bulls series, and it ceased to be a series at that point, so who wants to watch that? And who the hell wants to watch the Pacers? Could you imagine if Portland was playing the Pacers right now? When the Lakers were playing Boston, people cared, because the NBA was all about Magic and Bird (note: this had nothing to do with marketing either, the NBA playoffs used to be shown on tape delay). When it wasn't Lakers/Celtics, nobody cared. In the next decade, the NBA and NBC are making it to where if the Lakers are not in the Finals, no one will care. This is a rather broad topic, so if anyone wants to take a small bit out of my post and debate it, feel free. I have a lot to say on this, and it's hard to get it all in on one post. ------------------ Too-Rye-Aye! [This message has been edited by TheFreak (edited June 09, 2000).]
Why aren't you listening to KGSR? I really believe that a Portland/Indiana series would garner higher ratings than what we have. People are positive that the Lakers will cruise through this series, despite their troubles in the Sacramento and Portland series'. A Portland/Indiana series would have been closer in the perception of most. ------------------ Get your proper swirve on...visit www.swirve.com (coming in mid-June, for now visit www.eesite.com)
According to the Chronicle today, Game 1 of the finals this year was the lowest-rated prime time Finals Game 1 in league history. It was even down 9 percent nationaly from last year's already sagging Nielsen ratings. This is what happens when u cheat NBC. No one could give a damn about the Big Dumb Ass and his triangle bs runnning coach. Stop rigging up **** and maybe people would actually watch your garbage. All I gotta to say is HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! ------------------ Now introducing the starting lineup for your Houston Rockets: Starting at Center from Wake Forest - TIM DUNCAN
You know,I'm glad the ratings are down this year!!!! And nobody will convince me that, NBC and the NBA do not worked together on trying to put the big market teams in the FINALS!! Granted L.A. has to have half ass talent to get this far by themselves, but I believe there is some help from the NBA!!!!! Plus, I don't give a damm about the celebrities in the crowd during a game, the way NBC does!! The majority of the real fans are people like us!!!!! ------------------ TheMugg
