    According to NBAtalk.com...
    ----
Magic to the Max. Now that the smoke has cleared and the Magic know they are losing Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins, NBAtalk has learned that the Magic and Pistons have begrudgingly settled on a sign-and-trade deal. The Magic will get Grant Hill (who can now resign with his own team and get the ultimate MAX) and the Pistons will get a resigned Ben Wallace, Chucky Atkins (around $8 million for 4 years) and Matt Harpring in return. According to a source close to the Magic, if the sign-and-trade goes down, Wallace will get a 6 year, $30 million dollar contract. The contract will also have several incentive bonus that could easily raise that figure by as much as a $1 million dollars a year. Despite reports that Orlando balked at the money Wallace was asking for, the same source told NBAtalk that Orlando was willing to pay Wallace the $5 million a year, however the Magic couldn't make a firm promise that they could get under the cap. Had they been unable to, the Magic would have been forced to renounce Wallace, and Wallace would have lost his Bird rights.

The last few days the Magic have been scrambling to create more cap space in an effort to keep Wallace or sign Mo Taylor. They explored several option including: asking Hill and Tracy McGrady to take less money than the MAX and trading Bo Outlaw. Apparently Hill agreed to take less, but McGrady insisted on the MAX. Orlando also had some interesting talks with Houston about Outlaw, but couldn't get anything done. In the end, promises weren't good enough for Wallace and Atkings and they bolted to Detroit.Orlando wants to do a sign and trade however, because it can get Harpring's $1.25 million dollar salary off the cap. With the right amount of finagling the Magic can get around $4 million under the cap to sign Mo Taylor. This is a far cry from the MAX David Falk was demanding last year, but now that reality has set in, this may be the best offer Taylor gets. The Magic will have to add a back-up point guard for the minimum.

The deal, as it stands, leaves Wallace and Atkins on a team stuffed with power forwards (Wallace, Laettner, Williams and Vaught) and point guards (Hunter, Atkins and Cleaves). And it's interesting that Atkins and Wallace agreed to it without some sort of commitment by Detroit that they would thin out the ranks. Detroit is shopping Lindsey Hunter and Jerome Williams to whoever is interested, but at the time there are no takers. They'd love to dump Laettner and Vaught but, according to one source, they are 'untradeable.'
    ---

[*]It appears Rudy and the boys attempted to acquire Outlaw via the trade exception, as Orlando scrambled to clear cap space. It's good to hear they were on Outlaw's trail, as after our draft selections, I wondered if Rudy had forgotten that there are two sides on the court.

[*]Ben Wallace at $5million?!?!?! For those of you who haven't seen Ben Wallace play, he's basically a very raw athlete who has no offensive moves. Unbelievable.

Yeah, I've been speaking with Chad Ford of NBATalk on this since around noon time... I posted it up on the site.

Those talks are dead... which is the reason Ben Wallace is leaving now to Detroit in that sign and trade deal for Grant Hill. You would think the Magic would still be highly interested in the Rockets' exception however. Can't think of anyone else we would be interested in though.

If Grant does go to Orlando via sign and trade, that's a hell of a scoop they landed.

despite some posters feelings to the contrary..getting bo outlaw would be a GREAT WONDERFUL move for our team!!!

I really have believed this since he was at the clips and it is becoming public knowledge that rudy t agrees...

I think this one move in my mind regardless of cuttino going or staying or whoever else will make this summer a success...

    c-olajuwon
    pf-outlaw
    sf-williams/whoever else
    pg-francis

not an overly scary lineup but you would be suprised all these guys are "gamers" real gamers there is an intangible that gamers bring that some people fail to notice...look at the 94 team...i really am excited....

Outlaw is a joke. When I saw him laughing about his FT woes in the closing seconds of a game last year (his FTs cost the Magic the game), I lost all respect for him.

Now that Wallace has comitted to the Pistons, who are loaded at the PF spot, it sure would be a great idea if we somehow managed to get Jerome Williams. The man is a rebounding machine, something that our team SORELY lacks.

Specially since Hakeem´s status is questionable and Cato doesn´t rebound.

It´s nice to know that Rudy is after a PF though. Looks like he isn´t ready to bet all his coins on KT.

That's what I am thinking Thanos, how can we get williams?I tryed to think of a way,and this is what resulted from all that brain burning:
Williams,Hunter(Can bring offence from the bench as Cat),Leattner for W.Williams, Rogers, Bullard, 4.5 mill exe.

It works for both teams since detroit frees up some cap room, dumps leattner as they want to do(look at the article),and find the takers for those two players getting fair value back(good 3pt shooting + 'los).

    Both team rosters:
    Hou
    C-Cato/Olajuwon/Washington
    PF-Williams/Thomas/Collier/Leattner,FA in '01
    SF-Langhi/Anderson
    SG-Anderson/Hunter
    PG-Francis/Norris

Looks good to me,we free up space for an excellent Sf to come in next year via draft or FA since we would improve our position for next year, get depth, rebounding and defence.

    Det
    C-Mills/Moore/Montross
    PF-Wallace/Rogers/Vaught
    SF-Williams/Bullard
    SG-Stackhouse/Curry
    PG-Atkins/Cleaves

    Oops,they actually improve [IMG]

    What about that schmuck McGreedy?!!

He's been in the league a few years and done NOTHING!! He insisted on the MAX?? How's that for a team player...obviously he is not. He doesn't care about winning. He only cares about the almighty dollar.

Sorry, but I hope that ******* falls flat on his face.

Clutch: Sorry, I didn't notice that up on the front page.

I would love to add any of Mike Miller, Michael Doleac, or Matt Harpring. Doleac is a very good big man outside shooter. He was a pretty good defender in college, as I remember him slowing down Antawn Jamison in the tournament. He's a much better player than Collier, from what I have seen. Harpring's another hard worker who I wouldn't mind adding. Any of those three could be options if the Magic want to scrape a few bucks off their payload.

I just can't seem to get a feel for what the Rockets are attempting to do. The draft seemed to indicate that they were gearing towards cap space for next summer. If that were the case, why would they use the exception on a player like Outlaw this summer? What is our long-term plan? Outlaw is 29.

Rocket Guard: Jerome Williams has been a player I have always liked since he entered the league, but he is not a starter. He's listed at 6'9, 206 pounds. That's a stretch, as he is closer to about 6'7. He would get destroyed in the Western Conference as a full-time starter.

How exactly is Mike Miller going to get any PT with such similar, far better players in Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady on the roster? Shoot, Bo Outlaw's a SF too? There's gotta be some way to finegle Miller out of there. I'd like to get Doleac too. I don't know if I'd do it, but what about Cato + exception for Doleac and Miller. I personally would be real hesitant, because we would lose a lot of shot blocking. I wonder if T. Washington would be able to step up for us in that department.
