Rockets Trying to Move Up and Get a Big Man.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets Want a Big Man, But Not at Number 9. 'We'd like to draft for need,' Rockets vice president Carroll Dawson said. 'We like the big people, but the big people run out before we pick.' Sources said the Rockets have worked extensively to move up. The Magic and Bulls have multiple picks before the Rockets, and they are the only teams under the salary cap, making potential trades easier. The Rockets also could move the other direction. Many teams have approached them in an attempt to acquire their pick. With guard Courtney Alexander, the nation's leading scorer for Fresno State last season, expected to be available at No. 9, the pick has become more attractive to many teams. And the Rockets are clearly deep in the backcourt. 'We've debated everything,' Tomjanovich said. 'And we still have a lot of work to do.' Rant about it in the Rockets Rant.

interesting... I still doubt we'll be able to get high enough picks to get Martin, Swift, or Fizer... which are the people we want.

Does this mean that the Rockets aren't interested in Moiso? Probably so. It's either drafting Dermarr or trading down from here I guess.

To be honest, I don't like this idea at all. To me, it seems like "big men" are either exceptionally good, or a dime a dozen. After Martin and Swift, I don't think there's anyone who fits the "exceptional" billing (I COULD be wrong about Fizer, and I don't knkow much about the Europeans... but I don't want Pryzbilla or Mihm, particularly.

I'd much rather get another outstanding guard, and then pick up someone like Kurt Thomas or stick with KT.

if we do move up, i hope it's not just so we can get fizer, he's not worth moving up for. i would rather just stay at 9 and get dermarr.

Dice, put down the crack pipe and back slowly away...

Fizer is AWESOME, he measured out at 6'9" in sneakers at the Chicago pre draft camp, and one GM said this, " He is the only player coming out who demands a double team."

Fizer is the BEST player in this years draft, he plays with heart, emotion and attitude.

We would be LUCKY to have this man on the Rockets.

I wouldn't throw out a superb package to net Fizer, but say if all it took was KT, Bryce, #9, and a future pick(s), I'd have no problem making a move for him.

DD-interesting quote. And, as a rookie, it'll probably be true.

I wouldn't trade for him because he's the next CB, I don't think so (he's not the rebounder....he could be the scorer).

The more lefties on your team, the better.

Draft Moiso. Trade Moises.

Trade or bench Kenny Thomas.

NikeStad,

Lefties currently on the Rockets

Kenny Thomas
Cuttino Mobley
Moochie Norris
Carlos Rogers

Do we have any more?

I sent an email to the Rockets to confirm my list, we should have a small (for fun) wager on whether KT or Los are left handed, as I think you do not believe they are, correct?

What do you say?

Got my media guide right here - Carlos Rogers and Kenny Thomas are NOT left handed. Only Norris and Mobley use the left hand - you can also add Devin Gray to that list if you choose because he was on last year's roster.

Haven, why waste a pick on another guard?

We have three outstanding guards plus one very good backup on this team.

We need big men. I don't care if they are "dime a dozen", we need them.

No more guards, dammit!

Whew, thanks Jeff, you saved me from losing a wager...I owe you one.

I could have sworn I heard Danny Ainge, say that KT was a left handed version of Elton Brand. Or am I mixed up and Brand is left handed?

I really got to quit eating mushrooms on my pizzas... [IMG]

I'd wager Johnson will eventually play the 3... and we don't need a 4 one bit more than a 3, really. Anderson isn't a SF, really... an Williams certainly isn'ta long term solution. We *know* we don't have a SF, while KT MAY work out at the 4.

So, you can make a real argument that our need for a 3 is greater than our need for a 4.

As for Fizer... I just don't see it... I can't help but look at him and think "poor man's Larry Johnson."

I think this is disinformation, which Houston loves to do, so people don't think Houston is after Miles or Miller, and then trade up ahead of them. I believe they want to shock some people and grab Miles, somehow. The only 3 players worth trading up for are Miles, Swift and Martin, in that order.

I think the only team they could trade with to pull that off would be LAC. I assume that Martin and Swift will go 1 and 2, leaving Miles at #3. I think they know there is no possible way he will fall to us at #9, and it's highly improbable that Miller will fall to us either.

Orlando is offering Doleac, Maggette, #5 and #10, and a long term contract of a player NJ doesn't want, such as Jim McIlvaine for Martin at #1. I don't see how we could beat that, really. That's 4 economical players that could be future starters for NJ. Orlando obviously is trying to build with stars, especially if they can put the McGrady deal together. How's Duncan/Martin/TMac/Mercer/Barkley look as a team for the future? Impressive. The fact Orlando is willing to trade Maggette makes me think they know they've got TMac.

I don't think anyone else is worth Houston trading up for. I think this is a message to other teams that the pick is for sale in trade for a big man. Maybe this is how we get Grant, Croshere, Oneal, etc.

Haven, Don't forget that in LJ's first couple of years he was a 20-10 guy. He was a great player, but then he had knee and leg problems which is why he is not the player he was in he young days. If Marcus is the next LJ, as you say. We should try and get him, and hope that he doesn't turn out to be like LJ is now and turn out to be the LJ without leg problems.

Actually, wasn't it LJ's back problems that killed his game?

if Tsakalidis is at #9 would it surprise anyone if the rocks took him?

"with the 12th pick the Houston Rockets select... Mirsad Turkcan." -1998

who here called that one?

the name of the game in the West for years to come is having someone who can at least push Shaq out from his spots... when Dream was the closest thing to 'unstoppable' that the rockets had, a crafty 5 or 4 would push him out from his comfort zone in the left block. Rocks need someone to meet Shaq at the top of the key and focus on his lower body, since he has the lowest center of gravity of any 7-plus footer in the game.

I can only imagine if the Chuckster had been 6'10" or 6'11". My God- that would be UNSTOPPABLE.

I totally agree with DaDakota on this one. Marcus Fizer continually shredded his competition, including KMart in a Hawaii tourney, and was an All-American. If we were to deal up then we would probably include Cato in the deal and by dealing him ,or Walt Williams for that matter, we deal away their fat contracts. By dealing Cato or Williams we clear 5-6 million to go along with Dream's fat 16 mill. I'm not a capologist, but I'd guess we'd be pretty far under the cap and Tim Duncan might sign a 1-year deal with San Antonio, making him a free agent next year.

Rockets didnt select Mirsad at #12. He was the 18th pick of the draft.

Dakota, I think Calvin Murphy has stated that Kenny Thomas is left-handed on numerous occasions. Maybe he just has a left move that he uses, I don't know. But you shouldn't count on the media guide 100%.

A 6'10" Charles Barkley's butt would get 3 second violations from 12 feet out.
