Seems that more and more teams are trying to get college coaches everyday now.. Coach K. Callapri Izzo Donovan Do you guys think they would be great coaches in the NBA? Or just your everyday type coach that will most likely get fired after 5 seasons or so.
It's because most of the unemployed coaches in the NBA are downright bad. If you had a choice between the now-released Mike Brown, Vinny Del Negro and Coach K, who you want for your team? Coach K is proven; Del Negro isn't a bad choice, but not better than C. K, imo. And Mike Brown was Lebron's puppet, haha.
I think it's because it has been just long enough for people to forget how terrible Calipari, Pitino, and Tim Floyd were when given the chance.
Indeed. They'll soon remember why it may be a bad choice to pull an Izzo, Calipari, or anyother coach besides Coach K from the college ranks. The job he did with the Redeem Team proves he can make a NBA team pretty good. IMO.
How many wins does Coach K have in the NBA? College success does not always equal pro success, especially considering in college these guys always have great recruits, but could have a bunch of bums in the NBA. College coaches also have a love for their former players, even though their games may not translate to the pros. We've seen it plenty in both basketball and football.
He won a Gold Medal with LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Wade, Bosh, Williams, Howard, Paul, etc. He had arguably the best 5+ guys playing for him. We could also remember that he only won Bronze in the 2006 Worlds.
But it wouldn't be ill-advised to give Coach K a shot over Mike Brown, Mike Woodson, etc. They COULD have a bunch of bums, but there's always at least one good player on every single team in the NBA. From the bad teams (Nets - Lopez, T'Wolves - Jefferson) to the good ones (LAL - Kobe, Celts - Big 4). Sure there's always a chance that the college coach will flame out, but remember that all coaches had to start coaching somewhere OTHER than the NBA.
Its all a crapshoot. Even sometimes with great established coaches. You need the right players with the right head coach and the right assistants.
You're absolutely right. Adelman in GS is an example of a great coach failing because he was in the wrong situation.
Izzo should have a better chance, I believe. Coach K has way better recruits playing for him than Izzo year after year, yet Izzo usually outdone him in tournaments.
I don't know why Elston Turnder is not offered a job somewhere... are team waiting for him to hit 20 years as an assistant like Thibodeau did before hiring him?
College coaches are rarely good. I don't believe in them. They have a different attitude towards the game. They think they can outwork their opponents, they believe in practice, practice, practice (82 games hotshot), they are masters at controlling their kids, often they speak down to their young group (you cant yell at millionaire family men like you can a teenager, I'd like to see Knight try and choke Rasheed Wallace). Yes I am generalizing but time and time again college coaches fail in the NBA. If one gets to coach Lebron they absolutely have to go. It's so rare for a college coach to get a decent player, a decent team, and a decent shot to actually win. You can't pass that up. But I wont believe in em... So ya, I don't get the fascination.
Normally if a college coach is winning solely on the fact that he has great players, he has a lesser chance to succeed in the NBA, but Tom Izzo is a great coach, he made it far in the tournaments with less talent a lot of the times, he gets the most out of his players, I think he'd be a great coach in the NBA, as would Krzyzewski. I hear he preaches rebounding and defense, and likes a faster tempo offense(but not as fast as the Suns).
Yes, I meant the actual job that he did at making all those guys with their egos and abilities mesh into a cohesive unit. He turned Carmelo Anthony into a true leader with his coaching and it showed this season, until Coach Karl's recent fight with cancer. I think you mean the 2004 Olympics, that team was coached by Larry Brown.
I think Coach K is good Great for College However - How many times a year does he step on the court where his team is the Least talented team on the court? Equal in Talent? 9 time out of 10 . . .his team is 14 out 15 All Americans against some team that may have 3 he wins alot of his games recruiting [The Phil Jackson of College Basketball? ] Rocket River
