NBA salary cap shrinks, but Rockets looking good (for 2010)

I try not to talk too much about what might happen in the future because ... well ... it's a waste of time.

It cracks me up that many of you take your role as virtual GM so seriously.

"Hey Jerome, Aaron Brooks is the only player the Rockets have under contract for 20011-12. Let me tell you who else they should add."

But with the NBA's announcement late last night that the salary cap is decreasing a bit instead of increasing, the future is a somewhat interesting topic.

The cap for this season will be $57.7 million, about $1 million less than it was this past season, despite a league-wide revenue increase of 2.5 percent.

The salary cap has been rising steadily for several years (in 2002 it was only $40 million), so it is understandable that teams were expecting and planning for it to continue upward.

Since it won't, some teams might be up against it more than expected when the 2010 free agency hits.

Imagine if you had been budgeting for a cap of $61-62 million, but it comes out to $56 million. That's a huge difference. It's like losing a Steve Austin off your roster.

The Rockets are in excellent shape with only around $31 million committed for the 2010-11 season, a total that includes Yao Ming's player option of $17.6 million and Aaron Brooks' team option of around $2 million.

That means the Rockets could have about $25 million available to spend on free agents. Compare that to this offseason where they are already over the cap for next season and had only the mid-level exception of $5.8 million to spend.

In other words, in 2010, the Rockets can sign four Trevor Arizas.

As for 2009? Uh ... they are going to have to be very creative or very lucky.

Creative would be putting together a package of bench riders to get a legitimate big man to hold the fort while Yao is out. Lucky, well, darn lucky, would be getting Yao and Tracy McGrady back at midseason, healthy and primed for a playoff run.

Keep the salary cap in mind when you see headlines like "Houston May Show and Interest in Dalembert."

My torn Achilles tendon notwithstanding, the Rockets are more interested in me manning the middle than they are in paying Samuel Dalembert $23.6 million over the next two years to do it.

Oops, wait a sec, Dalembert also has a trade kicker in his contract, meaning if he is moved he will receive another $4 million. Oh yeah, the Rockets are very interested in adding him.

Getting rid of McGrady's contract isn't worth it if the Rockets take on a non-star contract that cuts into their 2010 shopping money.

It is not a lock that McGrady has played his last game as a Rocket.

Perhpas the Rockets most likely move for now is to find a player with a Shane Battier-type contract (two or three years at $6-7 million or so), and work a trade for perhaps Brian Cook and Kyle Lowry (combined salary near $6 million). That would clear money for the other team making the trade, and the Rockets are going to be interested in signing a guy like that in 2010 anyway, so they wouldn't feel at all bad about dipping into the 2010 kitty.

You vitual GMs out there can find me the list of those type players.

I really dont like Soloman very much if at all but he does make valid points...I can see the Rockets keeping TMAC all the way and the more I look at it I ask myself is there anyone out there that can give us with TMAC still can even at a reduced rate? Battier is the key now, if we can move him to get younger and faster then the Rox will be ok but if not then thats it no more moves for right now.

Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, I bet we see Tracy again. Unless we can somehow magically trade him for a young star (which who in their right mind would trade a young start for tracy), it would be a waste, especailly since Yao is out the whole season.

Solomon needs to read the clutchfans before he writes stuff, that 31m does not include Scola and Lowry, the 2 rookies, and whatever rookies we sign next year.

the $25M he says we can spend next year doesn't include the cap holds for lowry and scola. roughly $6M each. unless he assumes we want to waive our bird rights to them, meaning we can't sign them once we're over the cap.

    i dont see that happening.

aybe lowry signed to around $3M, clearing up the other $3M being held for him on the cap, thus making the total cap space available around $15M. now what to do with scola?

I don't think expecting him back by midseason would be delusional. Last I heard he was ahead of schedule and was aiming for the beginning of the season. Yes I know we're talking about T-Mac, but he'll definitely play for us again sometime next season if he isn't traded.

Definitely play for us sometimes next season? How do you know? There is not definitely here, both Tmac and Yao could be out for NBA for a year or life, or come back to the team to play again, but even Morey can not be sure at this point of the time.

tmac IS going to play next year. it's a given. AT THE LATEST, he'll be back by midseason. it's a contract year.

for yao, it depends on what type of treatment he takes. if he gets surgery, he'll be out the whole year. if he goes the traditional way and let it heal, he can play next year.

Yep, Solomon is assuming that the Rockets go to war with Yao Ming, Shane Battier, Trevor Ariza, Aaron Brooks, $25M in cap room and NOTHING ELSE.

Somehow, I just don't see that happening.

Solomon is almost a crappier version of Blinebury... and that's not too good either.

2009/10 is a washout season, bad s**t happened, the worst case scenario.

To me, the best strategy is to accept it and get in the best position we can to overcome it. I think that means just playing out with what we have (plus a veteran's minimum center), letting Tracy's contract expire and if he can get on the court for a final hurrah, great.

You tender Lowery for a lowball/semi-fair contract and hold off till the last second on Scola trying to judge the wind in the Chris Bosh market. I'd be fine with keeping Scola and spending our cash on a marquee scorer.

If Yao comes back for 10/11, you're right back in the thick of it, if not then you've got a second load of cap space to work with.

A three year plan is not too bad when you consider the extent of the bad breaks that befell the team.

Looks good only if you don't re-sign Scola, Lowry, and whoever.

If Solomon did his homework or read some of the more informed posters on here, he'd know that the cap room we're supposedly going to have is nothing more than a mirage. We'd pretty much have to renounce the rights to Lowry and Scola, trade away Battier, and pull other moves (according to Bimathug IIRC, who did an excellent post on how our cap situation is in another thread) just to sign ONE max contract.

Solomon's comedic approach to journalism might make it seem as though he's just "one of the guys" but, in fact, it just makes him look as credible as the next hack that writes for the Chronicle.
