http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/features/rumors/_/date/20111202#23191 "Free agent Chuck Hayes and his agent will consider all offers, but if it's up to the power forward, he'll re-sign with the Houston Rockets. "I think we'll probably make the decision without taking visits (beginning Dec. 9)," Calvin Andrews tells the Houston Chronicle. "I think the Rockets are the priority. I think it comes down to what makes sense economically, what makes sense basketball wise to him. He just wants to make sure he gets the right situation, whether it is quicker or longer. I don't have a package from the Rockets, yet." According to the newspaper, Andrews said Portland, Minnesota, Sacramento and Toronto have shown interest in Hayes."
We get upset because he's a short center, but he's the best damn short center I've ever seen. Chuck is a great talent that only Rockets fans will ever fully appreciate. He needs to stay.
In other news, Deron Williams wants to stay in New Jersey, Dwight Howard loves Mickey Mouse and Chris Paul's heart is in New Orleans. What the article implies is probably true... he does like it here. He has a big role carved out for him here in Houston and still enjoys benefits in China due to the Rockets (Yao) connection. But it's agent talk to put on pressure -- it's still going to come down to the best package offer.
Tons of fanbases could appreciate Chuck. My only hope IF he goes somewhere else is that he gets the respect from Toyota Center he deserves when he comes back in opposing colors.
First off I am a Chuck fan, but I see Chuck as a crutch in a way for the Rockets as long as he is here they will not go all out for a center because they can throw Chuck there.
If Mandry got a standing O, Big Chuck will get flips and cartwheels, I wouldn't be too worried about that.
Two thoughts. 1. I'm surprised he's getting offers from the crappy teams. I thought he'd be more suited for a winning team as a backup PF/C. No wonder he'd prefer Houston to them. 2. Unless he's going to a great situation(championship contender), I think he might give Houston about 500K-1mil/yr discount all things considered. He's still fairly young, and he'll likely get another multi-year contract after this one. If he stays in Houston, he at least keep his value intact. Whereas going to Sacramento or Toronto and getting used wrong may hurt his next contract. But if a team like Miami or Boston calls, I think he's gone.
Renounce Hayes, sign Nene, amnesty Thabeet, resign Hayes as are primary #2 backup center. The role offered + the decent money for a backup 5 for Hayes should keep his family here. If we're ever getting beat on D and Scola's knees start to regress, we can rotate Hayes at the 4 again for defensive stopping purposes. I think the role he plays with us (or any other team) is bigger than the money at this point.
Chuck's agent will listen to the offers, present them to the Rockets, and Morey will decide if he wants to keep Chuck. That is, Morey will let the market set the price, as he always does. He won't outbid himself. "WAIT! I could've re-upped Chuck for 2 million less than I paid him? Sheeeyiiiiii*." Not Morey's style.
The max he would make, which is about 5 million a year, is far from overpaid, imo. Especially considering Luis is making 9...
I've said it before -- if its money Hayes wants he's better off retiring right now and starting a branded Chuck Hayes defensive basketball skills camp with an emphasis on college athletes.
Yeah but sometimes that market sets a high price, and that is when a true decision has to be made. I don't think Morey has let any FA walk, has he? At least not a key rotational player, he tends to try to get value for them. I wonder if Chuck gets a great offer, if the Rox would be open to a S&T for him, or can they even do that? DD
Seriously?? What is up with the contenders? I mean I thought other players and coaches talk about how good a defender he is consistently, wouldn't that merit at least some interest from at least ONE contending team. Maybe other teams all know he just won't leave Houston, and those team think that maybe they can offer enough money to entice him to waver.
