Every player takes shots with one jersey with a number and one without. It's used for things like video games and commercials. When I went to media day last year, they had a specific area for shots with no number jerseys. Every player went through there and got a shot taken.

Well, as someone who went to three NBA Rookie Shoots for Topps, I can tell you that getting players to pose how you want to is like pulling teeth. The event is held outside of NYC (at the Knicks training facility in Westchester), starting early in the morning, and most of the players there are usually hungover (or worse...) after spending the night partying in Manhattan. Also, keep in mind that many of these portrait photos are cropped tightly for headshots on trading cards (and touched up to look better), thus the background means nothing. As for the uniforms? The NBA supplies them for the card companies, but they don't really care about sizes or numbers, thus some players look ridiculous in them (trust me, the same thing happens at the NFL Rookie Shoot).

Not sure why they chose the pics they did, since, on average, an absurdly large number of photos are taken during the event. (As one of the former editors of the photography, you have no idea how much initial digital storage space is required to house all the photos.) Surely, out of the thousands of photos taken, they could've found some better ones.

Hahah well done! Add 30 more years and he'll almost be a par with Grampa Oden.
