PHILADELPHIA -- Allen Iverson said Monday he's been contacted by the NBA regarding his allegation that a referee made inappropriate comments to him during a heated exchange following the 76ers' loss to the Chicago Bulls.

He also said he expected to be fined or suspended because he started the argument.

Iverson, upset about calls, challenged referee Marc Davis after the 94-88 loss on Saturday, and said Davis responded by saying he would "whup my ass."

Iverson had to be restrained by teammates, and a few minutes later was seen heading in the direction of the referees' dressing room before general manager Billy King interceded and calmed him down.

"From the history of it, I suspect something will happen to me," said Iverson, who did not practice with the team because of a thumb injury. "I would not be surprised if they decide I was wrong and should be punished.

"I said things that if it was during a game I'd probably get a [technical foul]. And if I kept on going like I was, I would've been thrown out of the game."

NBA spokesman Tim Frank declined comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

Iverson said Davis' response surprised him, but he didn't think the referee would be unfair down the road to him or the team.

"Regardless of what he said, I don't think he'd do anything in the future as far as making calls against me," Iverson said. "I think he respects the game more than that."

i dont know if many of these comments were just to placate the nba but they seemed to be nice and intelligent and well thought out.

props to AI for discussing this intelligently and with tact.

Marc Davis had this to say:

"we talkin' about an ass-whoopin' threat here, a threat, not an actual ass-whoopin', not a ass-whoopin', a threat. a threat. a threat. not an ass-whoopin'. a threat. i go out there and ref my butt off all game and listen to guys like AI talk and carry on all night, and we talkin' 'bout a threat here. a threat..."

This is an idea that has merit. Why not have the refs kick the asses of some of these whiney millionaries. I like the idea. Let's get some reality into this thing. When the players complain about a call, I think the refs should all jump on them and kick the do out of them. I am really tired of the disrespect the refs have to put up with. Go for it. Make A.I. the first case study. Then Francis. Gasol should be next and on down the line of whiners. Eventually, this will add decorum to the game.

tim562: He's immitating Iverson's press conference tirade a few years back about his going to "Practice" (or lack thereof).

I'll post the video in a few minutes.

Here's Iverson's tirade about Practice. Easily one of the top 10 best press conference videos ever.

If anyone else has the entire press conference, please post it. This is just the shortened version that I grabbed from ESPN's Best of Sportscenter that they run at the end of each year. I'd like to have the entire thing if possible.

I don't see what is inappropriate about the ref saying he'd whup Iverson's ass. Given the verbal abuse refs are always getting, a little mild trash-talk back doesn't even make me blink. Obviously, it'd be better for the ref to just keep his cool, but this isn't much of a transgression.
