I picked Melo to be the player with the ball in Durvasa’s thread, but after reading this article I think I'll go with Paul instead.

Knowing what to do with the ball in a close game is more important than being a more reliable scorer in the closing minutes of a game.

I also never knew Hornets had one of the best records when it comes to close games.

How do we know they win close games because of Paul? This just prove my pick David West. :p

I've never deviated from my opinion that Paul is the best PG in the league even when so many started handing that title to Williams and a couple of others over the past few years. I've heard some claim that he isn't a leader and that he's a flopper but the dude is just special. He's sort of a mix of the best qualities of a bunch of the top PGs and has very few if any real weaknesses despite being on the smallish side at his position in terms of height/length (though he is strong and stocky). I have the general belief that people tend to overrate the importance of PGs and I believe that wings and bigs are still where it's at but Paul is very special. I would still theoretically want my star player(s) to be a wing(s) or big(s) but when he's healthy, Paul would be the first PG I'd take without hesitation.

The whole definition of clutch is goofy. Wouldn't a player be clutch when the game is close with 5 minutes left and that player lights it up to break the game wide open.

Having a lot of close games may mean that the team has a hard time holding on to big leads.

Not really. Not at all. A basket needs to be made. Opposing teams are going to make you take the shot they want you to take. Your statement couldn't be more wrong.

 Your argument couldn't be any more flawed (if there is even an argument).

Of course a basket needs to be made...

Knowing what to do with the ball is getting the shot YOU want for YOUR team, not the shot the opposing team wants you to take.

Getting the shot you want means getting a good look for yourself or for others, or getting the ball to one of the player's hotspots.

If the opposing team is making you take the shot they want you to take, even if you have a reliable 4th quarter scorer, you are not running a good offence. I take a wide open shot from Shane Battier over a contested 3 pointer by Kobe any day.

chris paul IS still the best PG in the L. he's the most efficient player in the league this year (just a hair ahead of lebron).

people look at his stats, but his minutes are also down. plus he plays defense.

all this rose hype is pretty ridiculous.

i think the coaching staff is just watching paul's minutes, and then unleashing him in the playoffs.

At the highest level, teams aren't going to give you wide open shots. Contested/tough shots are going to have to be made. That's why I'd never want to give max money to a distributor and why (IMO) those guys don't win championships.

Paul really is probably the best PG in the league. Too bad elite PG's aren't really a necessary part of a championship equation these days.

thats generally what paul most excels at, taking over at 5 min and winning it with 90 seconds left, rather than with 2

True, but that’s why I said a player who knows what to do with the ball. He WILL get the best shot possible in the situation, some maybe contested, some not. In the end, if all you could complain about is “he simply missed a good shot”, then it’s a good play.

Remember, Jordan passed to Kerr
