There is a survey on nbcsports.com that has a poll of the greatest players at doing certain things like rebounding, scoring.... Well Hakeem is only 3rd when it comes to the all time best defender. This is not right. Even though I have heard time and time again that Russel is soo good...I have never seen him, so I can not comment on hm, but they have Jordan as number one. And even though I think Jordan was a great defensive player...he was not as good as Hakeem was iIthink. The reason is, no matter how good Jordan was, he could really only guard one guy at a time. Whereas Hakeem had to guard the whole team sometimes. The impact that Hakeem had was soo much more than Jordans. Also, Jordan most of the time had to cover only one man on the outside. And if Hakeem only had to cover one guy the whole time, I would think that Hakeem would dominate that man even more than he did. This is why, I have always thought that even though Jordan was the greatest player of all time on the offensive end, I think that the collective (defensive and offensive sides of the ball) whole of Hakeem, was in some seasons greater than Jordan's. But who am I. Anyways...but I think the All-Time greatest rocket needs CC.net help. So see if we cant help his cause... oh yeah...Yao is finally here!!!! Just my two cents...
Cannot agree with you. Jordan is GOD! When Jordan was in Bulls, no other team had chance to get champion.
IMO, Dream is the best defensive player of all-time. He could shut down anyone, block anything, AND he could steal the ball as well as almost anyone in the league. He was the total package. Most centers can't steal very well, and most guards can't block shots. Dream could do both with amazing excellence.

No way in hell Jordan could guard a big seven footer in the post because he would have been abused. On the other hand Dream rutinely had to come out on the perimeter to guard a smaller man that could not get around him and then try to beat the pass back into the paint to guard his own man. Dream did that succesfully for years. Dream truley was a one man defense not Jordan. Dream was the type of defensive player Jordan wished he could have been
Magic, Bird, Moses Malone, Thomas and Dream all lead their teams to Championships while Jordan was actively playing for the Bulls. Only Mo and Dream did not get multiple championships with Jordan actively playing for the Bulls. Jordan was never the Defensive player that Dream was, not even close. Edited for the following: Actually I think I am wrong about Moses Malones championship with the 76ers. I believe that took place the season before MJ was drafted.

Dream often controlled whole games on the defensive end. Forget his blocks that guy altered 3x as many. I think it's absurd to suggest a guard can dominate defensively on the same level as a dominant center. Hell, Jordan couldn't even double Dream's steal total. Bloody ridiculous. And Dream was the best period.
we should just ignor ignorance, but: we had the bulls number. for about 3 years in the mid 90's we held won the season series against them. ----------------------------------------------------------- about dream being the best defencive player ever: dream would never have blocked a shot if russell didnt invent it and perfect it. russell may not have gotten any steals, but he did average 22 rebounds per game. bill also, played at that level for about 13 years. take into account the time he was playing in. he was THE defencive presance in the league. sure, if dream played back then he would have been thought of as the best player of all time, but he didnt. we should stop thinking everyone is against us and start realizing that having dream ranked third all time is pretty f'ing good. we should be happy with it.
who thinks that if russell never played one game of basketball that hakeem would have the exact same number of blocks. i guess russell is the only person to figure out that if you put your hand up and try to stop the ball from going in that it might be a good thing. i don't think so. they didn't keep blocks/steals when russell was playing so it's hard to say who was better between them but both were clearly better than jordan who's only number 1 based on being who he is.
