Here's a comment from Jonathan Feigan, in response to something someone posted in his blog. I find it interesting, given that everybody is talking about replacing Hayes both last offseason and this one. At least one guy who watched him closely appreciates Hayes's contribution.

Sure, you can replace Chuck, but whoever gets his minutes better be better than Chuck in these minutes. And that's not as easy as some might think.

(A few weeks ago, I was visiting with Tom Thibodeau, the former Rockes assistant that ran the Celtics defense. I mentioned to him that it was really something to see that defense he and Jeff always ran with the Rockets work with a long and active four like Kevin Garnett, the Defensive Player of the Year. He said a few words about Garnett, particularly about his practice habits and consistent effort and then launched into a long spiel about Chuck Hayes, his style, his strengths, the ways they could defend because they had him. I never mentioned Hayes or the Rockets. We all know there are things Hayes cannot do, but the qualities Tom talked about were very tangible. Clearly, he disagreed with your assessment that Hayes sucks, but what does he know about NBA defense. It's not as if he will ever win anything as a coach in this league. As for Ridnour, I don't think they would spend their summer allowance on a backup point guard. -- Jonathan)

That's awesome...Let's give them Chuck Hayes for nothing. Rockets would do it because they get rid of Hayes and his contract, which would open up more playing time for Dorsey. Celtics would do it because Thibodeau is madly in love with Chuck Hayes. Get it done Morey.

Re-signing Chuck Hayes was the most underrated move of our offseason last year and he is easily the most underrated, undervalued Rocket by this board. For Christ's sake, we had people here who wanted to give the guy away last year for Gerald freaking Green.

He's one of the top 20 defenders in basketball, probably even less.

Does anyone remember that time Chuck carried the Rockets on his shoulders into the second round? Good times.

I don't think anyone who plays a 4 or 5 can be considered a top 20 defender if they can't block a shot. Who calls charges in the 4th quarter of the playoffs?

Chuck is a good guy who has come a long way. But I'd rather have one Luis Scola than 50 Chuck Hayes. If anyone feels differently, they are free to be wrong.

He still sucks as a starter for the makeup of this team.

I like Chuck but then whenever he tries to make a lay up, I can't help but to cringe. It's difficult to justify his contributions when he can't make point blank lay ups as a NBA starter/player. I just wish he could improve his offensive skills.

Couldn't agree with you more. Funny thing is, per his minutes, he fills up the state-line well for an "underrated" guy. He's a really good passer, obviously an excellent defender, a top notch rebounder, and he'll steal the ball from you. Obviously he doesn't have much of a mid-range game, his foul shooting is terrible, and he has trouble finishing around the rim, but ...

he's about as perfect of a role player as you are going to find in this league, and an extremely smart, hard working role player at that. Absolutely no reason to let this guy go, especially for the money he's making.

Personally, I'd like to keep our 3 bigs as long as we can. The injury bug is sure to bite at least one of them every year, and I wouldn't even flinch giving Hayes extended minutes. You can trust him on the floor.

Marcus Camby is a TERRIBLE defender but just because he blocks shots, people think he can play defense. It's weird.

I thank you, and probably Chuck thanks you, for your support. ;)

Something you will have noticed last year is Adelman still put Chuck in at the end of close games to play defense. Not once, not twice, but nearly every time. He is second only to Shane in help defense (and even then its a close call).

In fact the only time I can remember that he didn't put Chuck in at the end of a close game he had DNP-CD. Chuck's only DNP-CD if I recall correctly. Golden State, the first game of the streak. And Adelman seemed like he wanted to put him in at the end but he hadn't played at all the whole game. (I remember it distinctly because I was scared that I wouldn't get to see Chuck play in Indiana the next game.)

Chuck may be trade bait, but Morey isn't going to give him away or cut him... of that I am fairly certain.

I love the guy and his work ethic, but there is no way in heck he should be a starting PF in the NBA. Everynight his man cheats off of him to double Yao or Tmac without fear, and for good reason, he can't score.

Hayes has consistently gotten praise from both Van Gundy and Adelman for being a notably intelligent defensively player. However, his inexcusably heinous offense definitely makes him easy to miss if he is traded.
