Crawford about to get $160m-$180m. He can thank Werth/Boras. Not to say he wasnt going to get paid before but...

Still doesn't top Soriano's contract, but it's close.

Man, is there a reason why Adam Dunn keeps getting the short end. He's basically a better version of Ryan Howard.

Dunn has prodigious power but he's never hit above .267 in 10 seasons. Howard's only had one season with a BA lower than that. I don't think anyone would take Dunn over Howard.

    What a bad signing.

Adam Dunn is better than Ryan Howard in what regard?

And Howard can actually play defense.

WTF, Nats? Have you not seen the 2006-present Astros? Look at what a contract like that does to you. The big difference is, the Nats already suck. This puts them in a hole they probably can't dig out of. This isn't a #3 hitter you just gave $126 million to.

They are pretty close. I like that Dunn isn't totally neutralized by left handed pitching.

Baseball contracts are so out of whack. Baseball's kind of in between basketball and football in terms of #of players involved in the game. Basketball has basically half the players and its top guys get less than top MLB players. Even without the whole "max" thing, the NBA equivalent of Werth or Crawford wouldn't come close to these numbers.

Same with football, which is more or less twice the number of players as an MLB team. Yet they don't get anywhere near even half or a third of the amount. While reported figures in the media tends to be big, guaranteed portions of an NFL contract tends to be a lot smaller.

This is why there are more horrendous MLB teams than their NBA/NFL counterparts. When there's no limit to spending(both lower and upper), teams either have to spend a lot to or be really cheap to make money.

Jesus Christ. Yahoo is usually full of it with their headlines, but "shocking deal" for baseball player was truly spot on this time.

What was Walker thinking? The problem with Arsenal is they always try and walk it in.

Dunn is HORRIBLE??? Defensively sure but the guy is guaranteed to give you 40 HRs, 100 RBIs and OPS over .900 with 30 2Bs and now that he is in the AL to DH...he will be tremendous.

    Werth's deal = Carlos Lee's deal

If by horrible you mean "insanely productive" and "an offensive monster" then yes, he is horrible.

People cry about baseball economics separating the rich from the poor... but then there are deals like this which make absolutely no sense, and will end up CRIPPLING the Nats long-term far more than the simple "competitive imbalance".

They are close. The biggest difference being:

    Adam Dunn: 4yr/56 mil
    Ryan Howard: 7yr/154 mil

Were there players with contracts of 5 years or more that the player actually produced the entire length of the contract provided that there were signed as a FA?
