i couldnt find a thread about this topic. thought it would be worthy of discussion.

I know that the federal government does not have constitutional rights to do this but I think a federal ID card would be a good idea. it would really streamline things like background checks and such.

think how convenient it would be to have a smart card that contained your birth certificate, prints, retinal scan, passport, SS#, criminal history, school transcripts, medical history, drivers license, hand gun license, etc...

    pros:
    1. when filling out documents, all youd have to do is swipe your card through a reader and maybe give a thumb print to verify youre the owner of the card. 2. youd never forget or lose important documents.
    3. it would cut down on paper work.
    4. help track criminals.

    cons:
    1. databases could be hacked.
    2. could be used to discriminate against certain groups.

    tru tru...

but everyime you go to the hospital, gotta fill out paper work.

    bank... paperwork...

    dps... paperwork...

go to court... bring paperwork and fill out paper work...

    traveling... paperwork...

    apply for job/school... paperwork...

    taxes... paperwork...

national id would simplify all this junk. youd also have to carry just one card as opposed to several different pieces of id.

I think an ID card is a good idea too, but maybe not contain as much information in it as you listed.

My opposition to the National ID card is strictly reactionary.

    That being said:
Of course, I'm a Christian that believes in Armageddon in some form or fashion, so obviously, I'm a raging nut job.

This should either go in the "come clean" thread, or in someone's signature.

I agree. IMO it seems people move around a lot more these days and getting a new driver's license is a pain. Why not just a Federal DL/ID?

Something I was wondering while doing my taxes......

Why can't I just go to HR Block give them my SS and they pull up all of my W-2's and then we just go over deductions. Why do I have to hunt through the mail to collect them? The IRS has it all in a database why not allow HR Block and the others to access it with my consent and the necessary regulation?

Ever think eventually we could end up with a global currency and or a global ID? We already have the Euro......

No thanks. The federal .gov sucks as it is. What happens to Texas after this?

Fortunately this why it will never happen. The states will not give up their revenue in favor of handouts from the fed

I want one. I think the idea is anathema because we spent so much effort criticizing the USSR for having "internal passports" that we'd look like the hypocrites we are if we were to issue our own after the USSR's demise. I think the idea is too logical to not do.

It'll make it easier for Big Brother, but they're watching you anyway.

It'd be a goldmine for hackers, but security might be easier to execute with fewer documents and a simpler procedure.

Nice. I'm refusing to post in the "come clean" thread. Electable or not, I choose not to put all my dirty laundry on the table.

I could post for you. I would be totally honest.

Weslinder has only once been caught with a dead hooker in his trunk. Only once. And he was drunk! - let's cut him some slack.

well id think if it was implemented, it would be a smart card that could hold all you information for you and couldnt be forged. as opposed to a piece of paper w/ a number printed on it.

this topic makes me very nervous. i heard a woman say once that the government wouldn't be one to introduce this and that the convergence of all of the information would come from the people/businesses. i care not for convenience when it comes at giving up freedoms.

ben franklin said it himself, "Those that would give up essential liberty in pursuit of a little temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security."
