That high note was amazing. We all new that it was coming, but it sounded so unreal. That's something that I would have loved to have been there to hear. I'm glad that the beer came in plastic bottles.

Can't stand her or her music. I was disappointed in the extreme when I heard I was going to have to listen to her twittering like a friggin' parakeet before the start of the game.

Just my opinion, though. I'm glad for your sake that you enjoyed it.

-CRAP CRAP CRAP POO SHAT BUNG POOPIE POOPIE!!!!

what the matter dude, they pre record the national anthem, its not like being there would have been any different than buying the CD which surely will be in stores next week.

    come on...

the only show that was sung live was supposedly U2, and they made a big deal about how they were not going to make a recording and actually play live. its the first time a band has played live at the big game in years...

    Boo hiss canned music sucks

    The land of the what?

I don't think she said "land of the free", more like "land of the <b>LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</b>"

It would have been cool to see her have a nervous breakdown on stage, though...

I think somebody likes herself a bit too much.

My wife kept saying that she wished Whitney Houston was doing the anthem.

I didn't mind the singing but the fact that it was pre-recorded was pathetic. Gimme a break. Even Mary J. Blige and Marc Anthony sung God Bless America live!

Was I hearing things or did they announce her as the top selling female recording artist of all time?

How do you all know the anthem was pre-recorded??? Also, why do so many of you hate MC? She is like one of the few artists out there that can actually SING a note unlike some of this trash that is currently going around in the music biz today. (I won't mention any names.)

Actually Mariah is the biggest selling female artist of the 90's and that's a fact but even Madonna isn't the biggest selling female artist of all-time, that honor belongs to Barbara Streisand.

I was very disappointed in Mariah Carey's performance. With the revelation of her emotional/psychological problems last year, I was waiting for her to stop lip-synching in the middle of the anthem, begin drooling and babbling incoherently, and then lie down on the stage in the fetal position. When she stuck to lip-synching the anthem, I realized that she took her medication Sunday, and I was very disappointed.

The way she sung, the way her mouth moved and the microphone were all dead giveaways. There were moments when she sung very softly but was out of the axis of the mic. Yet, the sound was EXACLTY the same. Not possible no matter what mic you use. Moving even 1/4 inch will alter the shape of the waveform your mouth produces and change the sound instantly.

There were times when her mouth was close but not perfect when it came to singing the words. In the stadium, you could excuse this as delay from the room size. But, on TV, there is a direct feed with no lapse.

Finally, the mic she used was a fairly cheap dynamic vocal mic. It looked like an AKG I have sitting in my studio - not a bad mic, but Carey could do much better. If you watched Bono, Blige or Anthony, they all were using either Beyer Dyanmics or Sennheisers - BIG difference in quality of microphone.

One other thing - no monitors. In a large stadium setting like that, you must have HUGE monitors or in-ear monitors. With a mic like the one she was using, unless you really like feedback, I'd strongly advise against a big floor monitor. Everyone EXCEPT Carey was using some type of in-ear monitoring device. No way she could have heard herself over the symphony and crowd noise without them.

As for her talent, she can most certainly sing. That doesn't make me like her. Much like Streisand, who you mentioned in the next post, she doesn't write her own stuff and relies on mostly really cheesy pop songs as her backdrop. This isn't to say she can't sing. She can. Her music is just boring.

Well damn, Jeff just summed up all of my thoughts.

I still remember Super Bowl XXXII (Greatest one ever! :D), when Jewel came out to sing hte national anthem. She was waving to the crowd and they started the tape before she was ready. Hilarious to see her reaction.

I'm sorry but that is an incorrect statement on your part. Mariah either has co-written and/or produced all of her songs except for her two remakes which were "I'll Be There" which was originall sung by the Jackson 5 and "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" which was originall sung by Phil Collins and most of the songs on her Christmas album. It's good that you do admit she has the talent to sing but you're right just because a person is talented at something doesn't mean you have to like them. Just like a lot of people say Madonna is such a great artist, in my opinion she is definitely not. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

As far as lip synching goes...I thought the same thing about Whitney Houston...WEAK! I remember people telling me how great it was and thinking, of course it was...no telling how many shots she had to do it in the studio before she got it perfect.

I look at lip syncing both ways, sure it is weak or pathetic for a singer to go out there and lip sync a song when they are supposed to be able to do it well live but on the other hand even superstars mess up and I'm sure none of them want a bad performance at such a huge event or a god awful one like the one given at the Warriors game that was discussed in the NBA Dish Board here: Horrible National Anthem

Hey Lil Pun, about Mariah co-writing, didn't I say that about Madonna once and you said that probably meant she just wrote one line for the song. Is it not the same for Mariah.

Anyway, about biggest selling, it's hard to know what they mean. They could mean actual album sales, they could mean how many times platinum someone is. They could mean singles, could mean albums + singles, could be only US, could be worldwide. The only place I know to check is rockonthenet.com. They have certifications for an artists albums and that's it.

    By my count it was:

Streisand: 66.5 million - this included fifty billion gold albums and spanned 40 years and a ton of albums, may have lost track of a platinum or two with all the albums

Madonna: 59 million - all platinum (10 and 10 highest), no gold, can't tell how far past a platinum she is, could help catch up to Streisand, probably 15 or so albums (I should know this) and 19 years

Mariah: 53.5 million - one gold, all the rest platinum (including a 9,10, 10 which surprised me), same thing about catching up as Madonna, all albums in 90's I think, 10 or so, 12 years.

So Barbara wins the certificatin battle but has a buttload of albums and years on the rest, Mariah wins the efficiency battle, Madonna wins the my career is still going battle.

These are also certifications so you never know how many the album actually sold OTC.
