true. when I've used the Big Bang as a means to suggest that it MIGHT be evidence of God (even if not conclusive) I've had many tell me how we aren't even sure if it happened that way...that it was merely theory.
True, but given the context its rather obvious that Mr. Douche's memo was not driven by academic rigor, but religious implications. More importantly, one cannot ignore that the word "theory" is widely misunderstood outside the scientific community, where it means something closer to "wild guess" or "stab in the dark" than a rigourous, well-tested hypothesis that is almost certainly correct, or close to correct. This yahoo's attempt to insert "theory" after "Big Bang" in press releases is the point of a very disturbing wedge, one whose (presumably) ultimate goal is a society in which everything is subservient to theology, even the physical sciences. It's a slippery slope toward Sagan's Demon-Haunted Land.
Holy crap, Deutsch Bag! That guy wrote for the A&M newspaper when I was there. He was also head of the Young Conservatives and masterminded things like the "Most Liberal Professors Hit List." It figures that guy would end up being a Bush appointee. I swear, he is the next Karl Rove.
The big bang theory is more than an opinion. It is something that has been tested and has evidence to support it. The man is a liar and damaging the furthering of science in our nation.
Seriously in science it isn't a theory without evidence to back it up, and something that has been tested. The man said the big bang was just an opinion. That is a lie. It is more than just an opinion, though it is also not abosulte fact. For him to claim to that scientific theory is just an opinion, is damaging to scientific development, and education in our country. Any proof that the big bang is wrong, is welcomed by science. But claiming that it is just an opinion is a lie.
Can you test the big bang? I read about this in Angels and Demons, but as with all Dan Brown books, I take it with a grain of salt. BTW, I have nothing against the big bang theory. I think its a viable explanation of the origins of the universe, and if this Deutsch guy was smart enough, he ight figure out that maybe God created the universe by causing the big bang. I mean, whats more supernatural than something being created out of nothing?
I've read a little bit about it, but I'm woefully unprepared and unable to answer your question about testing the big bang. I think using the principles behind the hypothesis of big bang when observing other actions in outerspace has allowed them to do some testing of it. I don't know what other tests they were able to use. I just know that there are guidelines with qualifies as scientific theory and what doesn't. I have no interest in pimping the big bang. I don't care if that is actually how it happened or not. I only care that the guidelines for the scientific process are upheld and recognized. That is the danger that Duetcsh is in when he starts calling those things just a matter of opinion.
When Arnohld becomes president, I can't wait until he appoints Tom Cruise into the Department of Health. The prescription for bird flu is Scientology!
Moronic Christians like this just need to get over it, period. They need to join the "wait I got it now, God made the Big Bang" Christian crowd. This just makes me sick. The dude is nothing but an embarrassment to NASA. It figures he went to A&M too. Maybe when could send him to the moon and leave him there. This does it, I just flat out despise the Bush administration. It is pure evil.
As par the norm, the craziest thing about this story is that it's even at odds with most christian dogma. In reality, prior to the Hubble Space Telescope most of the world's famous astronomers predicted the big-bang would be proven false. Even Hawking. At the same time the catholic church was saying it was prefectly acceptable as an explanation for origins and did not overwrite creationism. 20 years later the big bang is a stronger theory than ever before. Yet the same fearful crowd of ignorants continues to lamblast it, trivializing decades of sound science and intentionally befuddling the public. Provided you view genesis as a metaphorical story and not a "literal account" the big bang is marvelously well suited to explaining "let there be light". That all being said does this really surprise anyone?
In other news, liberals lambast the White House for shouting down people who disagreed with their views.
