Of the black people you know and have seen that have all black parents, what percentage of them would you say has "nappy" hair?
Where did 'nappy' come from anyway. I know of 'natty', as in 'Natty Dread' by Bob Marley, which was misspelled by the recording engineer. Bob was saying 'Knotty Dread' but it sounded like "Natty'. Isn't there a band called Nappyheads?
Nappy? How does a person define nappy? nappy = Kinky? Nappy = unkept? Nappy = dreds? Nappy = thick? Rocket River
From websters.com nap·py1 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (np) adj. nap·pi·er, nap·pi·est 1.having a nap; fuzzy. 2.kinky; frizzy. Using that def., I'd have to say that most black people I see have nappy hair.
How can you tell? Nappy is traditionally kinky tightly wound hair that beads near the neck area and very difficult to manage.
What a strange thread. I went over and read the thread that originated this 'controversy'. AB, no offense, but you totally derailed that thread by turning it into a racial sensitivity training course. I didn't even think the highlighted comment by the thread starter was questionable.
hmm, how many people do i know that are 100% black in the first place...including myself? ahh, i'll just lump all of us together and say it's probably around 50%. now, this brings up an interesting conversation i had with someone a few years ago. we were looking at this one black girl who was probably around 18 years old. she was abolutely gorgeous. mahogany skin tone, well built, about 5'6" with silky hair down to her ass. well, the guy i was next to made some kind of comment about liking her hair and how not every black woman can have beautiful hair like that. i took exception to that comment. when you start talking about nappy hair or whatever, you're really talking economics. #1, does that person have the $$ resources to properly take care of their hair from a young age? there's a reason why the majority of higher income black families have daughters (and sons for that matter) with well groomed, well managed, beautiful hair. it's because they have the $$ to do so. so. going back to the crux of your post, i think that the percentage would be higher if you only look at 100% black people. why? because the majority of black people are not financially in a position to prioritize things of this sort. those that are mixed tend to have "good hair" (i hate that phrase, btw) because it's mixed with a thinner grade of hair, thus making it lighter (weight wise). i know this post is entirely stream-of-conscious, i'm sorry. my favorite type of hair absolutely has to be "native american". nothing is sexier than a woman with black rope for hair. my least favorite: blonde...except for the attorney from "ally mcbeal". my god, that woman has gorgeous, gorgeous hair.
According to dictionary.com "nappy" (as it would relate to hair) can be defined as kinky, frizzy and "in small, tight curls". At some time or another, all of those fit Moochie's hair style (as well as other players both white and black).
AB I get from your tone that you see NAPPY as a negative thing I check the original Thread and it was meant as an insult [not unlike BLOND in some contexts] I see Nappy as a thing neither good nor bad Hell . . when I had my dreds. . I love it Rocket River "So d*mn happy to be nappy" - Treach from Naughty By Nature
I don't do anything to my hair verse but the texture is not nappy and my parents aren't rich. There is just an assumption that it's OK to verbalize to blacks that their hair is somehow "bad", and that pisses me off. I am careful not to offend any race trying to be cute or witty. All White women don't have flat asses. All White guys aren't rhythmically challenged. All Asians aren't smart. All Indians aren't alcholics. All Mexicans don't like tacos. All Blacks don't have nappy hair.
