NAACP chairman compares GOP to Nazis
Bond delivers blistering partisan speech in North Carolina

Civil rights activist and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond delivered a blistering partisan speech at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina last night, equating the Republican Party with the Nazi Party and characterizing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her predecessor, Colin Powell, as "tokens."

"The Republican Party would have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side," he charged.

Calling President Bush a liar, Bond told the audience at the historically black institution that this White House's lies are more serious than the lies of his predecessor's because Clinton's lies didn't kill people.

"We now find ourselves refighting old battles we thought we had already won," he said. "We have to fight discrimination whenever it raises its ugly head."

He referred to former Attorney General John Ashcroft as J. Edgar Ashcroft. He compared Bush's judicial nominees to the Taliban.

The talk so infuriated at least one black family in attendance among the 900 in the auditorium that they got up in walked out in protest.

"He went on and on name calling," said Lee Wilson. "I walked out in the middle of his speech with my wife and three kids"

The harsh partisan rhetoric from Bond should not have surprised anyone who has followed him in recent years.

In July 2001, Bond said, "[Bush] has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection."

I'd like to see a non-partisan paper report on this.

    If it's true, it's indefensible.

There's not a whole hell of a lot of air between comparing your political opponents to Nazis and comparing them to terrorists. But to texxx, one is the "worst trash he's ever read" and the other is a daily habit. Hypocrite.

I was thinking today just how similar the current administration of the United States is with the current administration of China. They are both sort of corpro-fasciast, limiting civil rights, compromising the welfare of the working class to the benefit of the elite, promoting growth to the disregard of stewardship, playing world politics to secure oil instead of supporting inovation and conservation.

Seems like they are so alike and interdependent they should be allies.

Not sure how you can say that with a straight face.

China and the US are, in fact, allies. Of course there are political differences such as the Taiwan issue, but one only has to look at the level of trade between the countries to see that there is a lot of cooperation.

...and I guess you missed the entire SOTU speech wrt reducing our reliance on foreign oil... but please, keep on believing what you want with your eyes shut and your ears closed...

How can anyone take the NAACP seriously after this? They are an organization devoted to the advancement of 'colored people'. Given their mission, you'd think they would be a little more sensitive to historical events such as the Holocaust. I guess not. They are a group of hypocrites and self-interested extortionists. Nothing more. No cred.

Well, he is right that extremists have overtaken the Republican party, and that the GOP has been associated with some unsavory characters to say the least.

With that being said, however, it's always silly to compare anyone to the Nazis unless they sought out to commit genocide or something akin to that; at least so far we haven't gone there yet as a nation, so the Nazi comparison is just silly and rather dumb.

The only problem I have with the NAACP and other minority rights organizations is that they only become vocal when it directly affects Afro-Americans or Hispanics, and otherwise remain silent when it doesn't concern their "people"; that certainly doesn't go with the "we'll fight fight discrimination wherever it rears its ugly head" comment.

No offense, bigtexxx, but I will believe it when I see it...a bunch of politicians have paid similar lip service to the "oil dependence" issue before, haven't seen much concrete steps taken to get us off Middle Eastern or Venezuelan oil.

There are always people who indulge in hyperbole, even those who may have been prominent in the past as mayors or NAACP officials, etc. And, unfortunately, this provides political cover for political opponents of the NAACP to go on the offensive.
We should remember that in the main, NAACP has fought for minority rights over the years. You may or may not agree with them on every position, but I think most minorities understand whose side they are on. Without their struggles, I doubt minorities (and this goes beyond black people and hispanics) would have made the advances they've made. I think all minorities owe the NAACP a debt of gratitude.

I'll say it again, until the NAACP and other black leaders start actually caring about advancing the cause for blacks, instead of remaining in power, they're a useless organization.

That's an idiotic statement, I hope you're not serious about what you just said. Go back and study the illustrious history of the NAACP and you'll learn just how much they've advanced the cause of minority rights. The NAACP is the organization, the leaders you dislike will come and go and be replaced by others, but the organization itself has been the cornerstone of civil rights since the early 20th century.

Some terrorists are muslims, so many in the GOP think Muslims are terrorists. The Nazi's were white, and the GOP is known as a party for white people, so the NAACP thinks the GOP are Nazi's. One stupidity leads after the other.
