Mystery And Intrigue- How the Rockets fit into this year's draft

Houston - 12 prospects. 2 days. An infinite number of possibilities. That’s the vibe permeating Toyota Center right now after the Rockets sent a dozen draft eligible prospects through their paces Monday and Tuesday.

The team is keeping its cards carefully hidden, so don’t even ask for the players’ names – the Rockets aren’t sharing. Knowledge is power and Houston’s brain trust has no desire to divulge even the tiniest of secrets which might tip their hand in any way.

That there would be such mystery and intrigue seems appropriate given the draft position the Rockets currently occupy; which is to say, they don’t - not in the traditional sense, anyway. With selection day approximately two weeks away, Houston is preparing for a draft in which it owns exactly zero picks, putting the Rockets in the perhaps enviable position of a lurker at a garage sale, free to examine all the possibilities until they find a deal upon which they want to pounce.

“People say, ‘You don’t have any draft picks, so you don’t have as much to do. It’s going to be a slow offseason,’” laughs Gersson Rosas, the Rockets’ Director of Player Personnel. “But it’s actually going to be the exact opposite for us because you just don’t know if you're going to get in the draft and you have to be prepared for any and every scenario that might present itself.”

    excellent point!

if you know where you're drafting, you scout players who are supposed to be available around that position. the rockets could trade for the #2, they could buy a late first rounder from a team that has more than one, they could buy an early second rounder.

the rockets have to have intel on the entire draft board. subsequently, so do the fans!

here are some credible sites for those who don't yet know:

    #1 source = DraftExpress
    #2 =ESPN
    #3 = CNNSI
    #4 = NBAdraft.net

do not use cbs sportsline, yahoo, realgm, or basically anything else. for the past 6 years i've been putting all of the mock drafts that i could find to the test as the draft happens. the 4 sites linked above always finish ahead of any other mock draft as far as draftee's stock is concerned. meaning, if a mock had a player going 6th and he went 7th they knew his stocks value pretty well. if a mock had a guy going 26th and he went undrafted, they screwed up. the 4 sites listed above always finish in the top 4!

    hope this helps someone!

Regarding these paragraphs, any ideas who the Rockets may be targeting? I think this workout serves both the pipe dream of the #2 pick and getting a lower pick in the late lottery or 1st round. Who would we want at a pick between #10 and the end of the 1st?

IMO, the only one who "makes sense" for the Rockets between #10 and #30 is B.J. Mullens. Yes, I'd love to have an Earl Clark, James Johnson or DeMar DeRozen. The point guards available after #10 are pretty much clones of Brooks and Lowry, so why do that? We have Artest and Battier logjammed at the SF slot. We need a young center to develop so, with the range you specified, that leaves Mullen since there are no solid PF/Cs who could challenge Scola. Note: I'd rather have Fesenko of Utah or even Jordan of the Clippers.

Knowing Morey, he'll take the most talented player instead of need. This is one of the weakest drafts in memory as far as the center position goes. I would love to see the rockets get a project 5, but I don't know if they can get that player in this draft. From what I have read there will only be three true centers drafted and 20 point guards.

im thinking we're going to do a 2 for 1 kind of......trade some contracts and a significant player from our roster for a high pick, then trade down a spot or two and pick up a lowr pick and an veteran player...so we'll get a young guy to keep building a promising future and hope he can contribute something immediately, but also get a vet who will help now for sure...

Rockets will trade Brooks to the Kings for the #4 pick.

Ty Lawson-Solid backup to Aaron Brooks
    Wayne Ellington-Insurance for Von Wafer/T-Mac
Besides that I don't see alot of hope for people coming in and making a difference.

i think they see ty lawson as an even younger lowry with better offensive talent....im not sure how high other teams are on lowry, but he's a capable starter and maybe Houston will package lowry as part of a larger deal that gives them a high pick and a lower pick, then i can see them trading the high pick for a solid vet and the low pick using to take lawson..

This draft has a lot of point guards, if Morey can play his marbles right, he can land an all-star PG.
