Francis Will Sign with Houston Rockets

HOUSTON -- After signing his new contract with the Rockets, guard Steve Francis expressed jubilation at his return to the team.

"It's great man. It's a great opportunity. I'm definitely excited. This is a pretty astonishing moment right now. I am still caught up in the hype. Hopefully tomorrow at the press conference, we will be able to get everything done," Francis told FOX 26 Sports in an interview Thursday afternoon.

Francis signed a two year contract with a player option for the second year. The total value of the deal $5 million. He will make $2.4 million in the first year and if he chooses to play the second year Francis will make $2.6 million.

Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey told FOX 26 Sports he is looking forward to seeing Francis in a Rockets uniform

"We just think Steve will step right in and contribute. He's a great fit with Rick Adelman. He clearly picked us because he thinks this is a winning situation and we agree," Morey said.

An agent for Steve Francis told FOX 26 Sports Thursday morning that the free agent guard would sign with the team.

"He made a decision to come home and sign with the Rockets. Steve is very much looking forward to playing for Houston," Francis' agent Jeff Fried said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

Francis played for the Rockets from 1999-2004 and was then traded to Orlando in the deal that brought Tracy McGrady to Houston.

Francis had said Wednesday night he was considering 3 teams and the Rockets were one of them. He did not identify the other two but league sources indicate he was also looking at the L.A. Clippers and Miami Heat.

Francis,a three-time All-Star with Houston, was traded by the New York Knicks to the Portland Traiblazers in June, and last week the Trailblazers bought out his contract. He was due $34 million.

Sports Agent Nate Peake, who also represents Francis, said Francis believes this will give him a chance to finish the job in Houston.

"Steve was upset when he was traded by the Rockets when it first happened. It's a great opportunity for him to finish his goal goal of helping the Rockets win a title," Peake said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

Rockets guard Mike James applauds the move to reacquire Francis.

"That's incredible. This makes us that much better. Steve is one of the best players at his position and he is going to make us a better team," James said.

Fried, one of Francis' agents, received a phone call from New York Knicks head coach Isiah Thomas Thursday afternoon. A most unusual call given the circumstances.

"Isiah just called to tell me how ecstatic he was for Steve. He felt it was the right fit and how he felt that we have now caused him tremendous headaches because he believes that Houston is going to be a force in this league next year," Fried said.

Thomas knows he can't win in New York. The media there gave him grief for trading for Francis and, if Francis is successful in Houston, Thomas knows he will get lit up again.

oh give me a break. knicks fans hated steve francis b/c of his low bball IQ and how he pounded the air out of the ball. they were ECSTATIC when they traded francis for zach randolph. trust me, the knicks are going to miss Francis.

Dude, just give it up. All I've seen you do for the past couple of weeks is hate on Steve Francis in any way possible. You said no way the rockets would sign him, he doesn't fit the offense, he's immature, blah blah blah. Guess what, He's now apart of this team again so stop your agenda against Steve and brace him as a Rocket. Calm down and let whatever hatred you have for him go. Obviously, if Rick and Morey both approve of Steve, I don't see why you can't do the same.

first off i was adressing why knicks fans wouldnt miss Francis. secondly ill admit i m not a francis fan but i do approve signing him. it's not like Morey and Adelman were actively chasing him, we just have him now because he wanted to come here for chump change. its a low risk/high reward situation. if francis can prove me wrong and be a great team player then good for him, although i highly doubt it. as long as he doesnt stunt aaron brooks' growth i'll be happy.

Causing Isiah tremendous headaches? Why should he care? We'll play them twice and that's it. We'll be in the playoffs and they won't.

Wow... This reminds me of all those "We need to play Novak/VSpan/JL3 more because they are the future of our team" posts all over again. And I thought this board was starting to become more cheerful to read. I am glad we got rid of JL3 and VSpan... :D

I'm pretty sure that Steve Francis couldn't give a rats you know what whether or not you approve of the deal and I do know that no one cares whether or not Francis proves you wrong.

is this your attempt at making a name for yourself cause it's getting annoying?

someone should tell isiah the rockets were a problem for them long before they got steve. nice move by him to actually call steve's agent and wish him well though.
