This is the 4th time one has died on me, and this one was just turned on....very strange. I love the system but man, so frustrating. DD
I have had it since 2005, and had to purchase a 2nd one for when this one goes out. Apparently there are some RROD fixes that are out there, but I have not opened the case. Also, has anyone used the snap on extra fans and have they helped? I think I may need to get that item. DD
Haha wow. I was just talking in the other thread about what next-gen console I would end up buying and well, this helps me a bit. Isn't it a red something error? Red light? At least they allow you to send it back, right? And I understand this is a common problem with XBOX360? But I also hear the PS3 heats up very fast and the 40GB PS3 doesnt playback ps2? So much to learn.
I think I may have overheating issues.........but they are still fixing it for free....so....no biggie. DD
Don't you have to re-buy the warranty. One of my brothers has been using the fan for a couple years and he doesn't have any problems. My other brother doesn't use one and he's on his 4th system.
I only just bought a 360 very recently, so it wasn't my system... but I can tell you my brother bought one of those snap-on fans, and it only caused more issues. He'd tell you to stay away. A GameStop employee also mentioned in passing that those things were bad news. Take it for what it's worth... just a couple opinions. There's no way to know for sure whether those things may have prevented RROD once or twice for other people.
It's probably more important to keep all those vent holes clear of dust/debris and let the 360 have room to breathe (i.e. not stack it on another component that generates heat)...than it is to buy some third party fan and stick it on there. I think some of these 360s that come off the line have inherent flaws that make them more prone to failure...versus just attributing the problem to over-heating...which may or may not be true.
They have with the new Zephyr systems, but if you have an original, it is more than likely eventually going to fail. DD
Do you have to pay to get it fixed? One of my friends got his fixed for free but another friend of mine was told by MS that he would have to pay a $150 or something.
you can have your ps3 running for days (i wouldn't recommend doing it) but its possible as ive done it before. PS3 has 2 fans that cool it down, and also if it were to get so hot that it could do damage to the system, it turns off by itself, therefore preventing it from dying. Believe it or not, I was going to get a 360 Elite but I said screw that, on that very same day i wanted to buy one my friend gets the RROD. Sure they fix it, but i dont feel like sending in my console and going without it for 4 weeks or w/e because of Microsofts fault. plus, its super quiet Why wont they RECALL IT!!
Technically, Zephyr was the original Elite systems, which aren't really much better than the original 360 systems IIRC. I think the one that made any difference was the Falcon line, which were the Premium 360s (with HDMI) that came out late last year IIRC (newer Elites might be the same too, not sure). Even then, I don't think it is so much a fix as it is systems that are less likely to overheat due to smaller chips that run cooler.
I almost plunked down about $400 for a 360 20 gig and GT4 bundle -- but I talked with a friend who is lending me an X-Box that he never uses for a few weeks. A bit of a test drive with Assassins Creed and Gears of War -- so far AC is tedious and i'm going to give GOW a try tonight. The main thing I wanted to post is this 360 is a piece of junk -- the noise is crazy especially if you move it a little while it's running. It makes a sound like an old 3.5 floppy drive during start up. The DVD slot won't open without tapping and pulling on the door -- the general quality of the whole thing seems really cheap. This 360 is pretty much new and rarely used with all these issues -- I would hate to have one I used a lot. Sony quality --> PS3 may end up being my final choice -- PS1 and PS2 never gave me a bit of trouble -- the X-Box seems very cheap in comparison.
Build quality has been the only real negative for the system IMO. Unfortunately for MS that's a hell of a big negative.
Its a slap in the face from MS to its following. The fanboys don't make nearly as big of a deal out of the situation as they should. I remember hearing the failure rate was unacceptable by any normal industry standard. To MS credit they do have a good reputation with repair/replacement. But its just absurd. People want working consoles not good a repair system.
