Van Gundy is still under contract with the Knicks until July 31st. If Les and CD were smart, negotiations could have went something like this. Les and CD-Well since you are under contract with New York still, how about we go ahead and sign the papers but do not make it a public announcement until August 1st? That way the financial compensation that we would have to give to the Knicks for your release, could be given to you. Van Gundy-I like that idea. Is this at all possible?
I'd rather have the two months of prep time with a new coach than a second round draft pick (the rumored compensation).
New York isn't exactly in a position to negotiate since they only have JVG for a couple more months...they'd be happy with anything they'd get...
