Boy, did I exagerate or what? He's not an All-American; he's all conference, but what the hell... He didn't pick up a lacrosse stick until he was a junior in HS. He became a starter and the state championship team. His senior year they won the state championship again and he made all-state. He's a 3-year starter at Goucher and should have a good shot at being All-American next year. Hell, he might be AA this year... they haven't announced those teams yet I don't believe.
Don't things like this made a father's day!!! There are very few joys in the world greater than seeing your son or daughter succeed and get recognition from others for their success.
Congrats Giddy. Two of my nieces (ages 13 & 8) and my nephew (age 5) have all taken up lacrosse in the last few months. My sister is having fun shuttling them to practice and games all over north central New Jersey.
Make sure they see the mid-April issue of SI. There's a big piece on there on the rising popularity of lacrosse.
Congrats, Krame... I mean, giddyup. If only I knew what lacrosse was... Thanks to GOOGLE, now I do. 2 Homer SImpson quotes in one day? You're FLaaaaAAAAAaaaaming... Awesome, sWilkins... you da man!
My son thinks he could have played D1 lacrosse. The Attackman teammates in HS that he checked everyday in practice went on to Maryland, Navy, and Loyola-- all top-notch D1 schools in lacrosse. At one point he thought about trying to move up but by then he had fallen in with his teammates, coaches, et al. So he stayed put. Like I said, he only played two years in HS and never went to a camp of any sort-- where much of the sorting and recruiting goes on. He was playing on a bad soccer team in HS and had some friends on the lacrosse team, so he gave it a go. He's got good speed. One of the Navy coaches remarked in HS, "With that speed, he needs to be playing somewhere..." His coach at Goucher runs a lacrosse camp at St. Johns in Houston every summer. Three of his teammates are from Texas-- including that All-conference goalie who is from San Antonio.
