My son is headed to Austin with my brother in early June for a visit. He got wait-listed at UT MFA Directing this year and is wanting to advance his candidacy for next year. Anyone out there who can help him with work prospects (DaDakota, Cohen et al) or other general advice about UT, the MFA program or life in Austin? Thanks in advance...
I can't give him a job, but if he's willing to do so, PPD is always looking for (healthy non-smoking mostly) people to do clinical trials - and they pay quite well. A lot of UT students roll through here for extra cash. AND... If he puts me down as a reference, then I get a referral bonus too!
Or realize that it's overrated, has a poor infrastructure, an inferior restaurant scene, and that it's egotistical beyond all belief. With that said, UT is a great school, Central Market on Lamar gives out good free samples, and I like to bike around Town Lake.
I lived in Austin for the 1974-75 school year near Hemphill Park. My dad graduated UT engineering school in ~1948 and my brother got a MS in Education in 1979 or thereabouts. I haven't been to Austin since about 1982 or so... bet a lot has changed.
I say it's changed since 2004-2005, since they changed the zoning laws around west campus to allow high rise apartments. The construction around east Austin is getting up to I-10/Katy proportions.
MFA? Do what I did, get an apartment in Hyde Park and bike to campus (or ride the UT shuttle). I loved every Reality Bite moment of it. He can find work on campus and hang out on West Mall on his breaks.
wow and I thought I was only one who preferred Houston to Austin. My wife always wants to move back to Austin and I always raise the same points. Austin is a nice city, fun to visit, but I prefer Houston. Houston is just so much more convinent than Austin...
That was just a little dig at several Austin snobs on this board who seem to think it is so much better than Houston. Fact is Austin is turning into mini-Houston more and more every day.
Sorry us Austin snobs are still proud of being Austin snobs. so what makes it a mini-houston? i'd like to know cause i've been in houston for over 20 years and this place is nothing like it.
Things I love about Austin (even though I live in and love Houston) Lack of humidity World's largest Coop Trudy's ... mmmmmmmm Salt Lick.... double mmmmmmmmm Memorial Stadium! Actually having hills in the city
i also notice how a thread that has nothing to do with comparing Houston to Austin, the Austin haters are the first to snipe. this is like Marbury saying he's the best PG in the league when Steve Nash comes to town.
